SOUTH TAPANAKI

PATEA FLOWER SHOW. The weather proved propitious for the annual flower show and sunshine fair held in the Town Hall last Tuesday by St. George’s Church. The show was declared open by the Mayor (Air F. Rainsbottom), who stated that he wished the greatest success to all those who had worked so hard for this event.

The stalls looked very ' attractive with the general decoration scheme iu gold and green, while the different articles for sale were well set out. The numerous stallholders were kept busy and it is to them, as much as the public, that, the pleasing total sum of the takings is due. That it is as much is accounted tor by the generous spirit of those who attended, and is especially gratifying when the present hard times arc taken into account.

The flower show was a very pleasing sight, the blooms being very fine. The results of the different classes arc as follows:

Best arranged bowl of flowers. —Aliss B. Gimson 1, Miss J. Sheild 2, Aliss B. Dcrrott 3.

Best, arranged vase of flowers.— Miss J. Sheild 1, Mrs Sheild 2, Aliss R. Uoneyfield 3.

Victorian posy.—Airs Sheild 1, Aliss I'elen Haraerton 2. Gent’s buttonholes (3) —Aliss Noelino Green 1. Aliss I. Derrett. 2.

Best arranged collection of flowers — Mrs W. F. Sheild 1. Best aria aged collection of roses.— Miss 1. Derrett 1, Aliss Gibson 2, Mrs Sheild 3.

Mrs L. T. Adams acted as flower dcwaid.

These results were not, announced till late in the evening, xfter everybody tad ;u<iged the entries themselves. Two persons judged the winners to be the same as the judges had, Alr.i Ah.es and Airs Green each receiving a prize for 20 judging. In the evening a very delightful concert programme was arranged by Mrs G. Corbett, those taking pan being Misses J. Sheild (piauo solo), R. Matt hinney (violin solo), J. Finlays jl (Highland Fling), Airs G. Corbett and Mrs Ingley (vocal solos), Alessrs Roy and J circus (vocal duct), L. Pauling (humorous recitation) and S.Aloore (cornet sclo). The whole programme was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience, each item receiving a ■ round oi a] piause The wireless which was installed by Air A. J. Cooper, was alsc greatly appreciated. Jumble stall.—Boys’ Club, under Mi N. Martin. .Afternoon tea. —Mestfames Bn.-Icy Pearce, Drummond, Nelson, Alisses L. D • i;‘ir Hird, Thorburn and V Shedd. Bran tub.—Misses J. and Al. Carey. Bobs -Air C. Beaucha up. Darts—Mr and Aliss Rarnsbotton; and Airs White. Fruit salad.—Airs Oldham. The winners of the various competitions were as follows: —Ham. Airs Green (748 peas); box of .chocolates. Aliss E. Couchman (Bft. loj inches of ribbon); humpty, Airs Sheild (941

peas); cigarettes, L. Edwards (395 matches); towel rack, Mrs Mauhinncy (14hrs. 21min.); doll, Miss D. MacDiff (53f inches); cake, Miss J. Thorburn (GJlbs); bags of flour, Miss Harris, Master G. Clarkson; and lemon squash cordials, Mr J. Julian (197). PERSONAL. Airs I. Uoneyfield has returned hom® after a visit to Rotorua for her healtn. Miss Al. Ilainorton was present and took part in the recital given -by Mademe Symes’ pupils in Wanganuf 1 st Tuesday night. Airs Wodyer-Smith and her baby son, of Napier, is visiting her father, Al- Southeombc. Aliss I. Watson, of New Plymouth, is visiting her aunt, Aliss Kelly. Aliss Marian Gibbings was present at. St. Mary’s Old Girls’ reunion at Stratford during last week-end. ATr McQueen, of ALanutahi, is at present an inmate of the Patea Hospital. His condition is improving.
