MINIATURE GOLF

A COURSE FOR WANGANUI. OP I: N ING CERE M U N Y TO DA Y. Falling in line with most other centres in New Zealand, Wanganui will to-day open a miniature golf course which should fill a popular need, for ever since the craze for the new game wept through the United States, Great Britain and Australia, there have been many who have looked forward to the day when miniature golf would be introduced to Wanganui. The locale of the miniature course is Harman’s Ilall, centrally situated in Victoria Avenue, ami thus it should prove a popular rendezvous both after noon and evening. One great advantage that the Wanganui course has is that it is entirely under cover, and

therefore not subject to the limitation imposed by a variable climate.

Considering that they are filling a community need, those responsible for the new enterprise have invited the Mayor of Wanganui. Mr W. J. Rogers, to officiate at the ceremony at 3 pm to-day. After a brief speech the Mayor will drive off the first ball in the time honoured manner, and will then proceed to play the, first match over the- new course against a worthy opponent, Mr James T. Hogan w M.P., for Rangitikei. “A “Chronicle” reporter seized the opportunity to inspect the lay-out at Harman’s Hall yesterday afternoon, an I found the commodious hall a hive of activity, the final stage of prepa-ation being under way. The course covers eighteen holes, each fairway being laid cut with a hazard or a “bun Ker that is sure to prove interesting to negotiate One in particular is a “switchback’ which will remind motorists -4 the War rengate Road and should prove highly diverting. There are many o'her hole equally ns entertaining, and aUogerher the course appears,to have bean laid out with considerable ingenuity.

A feature of the fairways n that they are laid down in a specially woven material which was procured from tie Wanganui Woollen Mills, and h. is pleasing to observe, that considerable support has been provided to lic.al in dustries in this direction. The GmbeT used was all procured locally and the

joinery was also the work of lo? H fac tcries. Quite a large staff has beer, hard at work in the task of getting the course ready, the interior decorating I; »nig in the hands of Messrs Hughes, Allomes Ltd.. and the scenic decorations frejn the brush of Mr K.’Howell. Judging by the interest that had already been evidenced in miniature golf affairs in Wanganui, this enter prise should be well received.
