MELBOURNE CUP PRIZE

EXCITEMENT AT HENDERSON STRUGGLING FARMERS’ LUCK [Special to “Chronicle.”] AUCKLAND, Nov. 18. There is joy—great joy, in a Henderson family and neighbours from far and wide have been coming to extend congratulations, for a second prize in one of Tattcrsall’s sweeps, a prize of £6OOO, has come the way of the Henderson family. Those who shared in the syndicate are all people in the Massey district, five miles from Henderson, with the exception of one girl.

The winners are: Mrs G. W. Sinton, 5s share; Miss Ada Sinton, aged 19. 6d share; Mrs Sandford, 2s fid share; Airs Ron Smith, 2s 6d share; Air Jack Aleynall, 5s share; Aliss Alyrtlc Whallen, Kapuni, Taranaki, 2s fid share. It was Airs Sinton who suggested to her friends that they should take a ticket in the Alolbourne Cup sweep with Tattcrsalls, Some were reluctant and some were eager, which is usually the way with such ventures- Then came the information before the race for the Melbourne Cup that Airs Sinton and her friends had drawn Number 4681, and alongside it was the horse, Second Wind. The day of the race was awaited with intense excitement, and on that morning a passing butcher told Airs Sinton that Second Wind was second favourite. Ther. their hopes soared high. On the day of the race they listened to the wireless description, and great was their excitement when they heard that Second Wind was second to Phar Lap. There was no wealth among this little band, to whom the money has come as if from the skies. The Sinton family have struggled “up against it” and have just made enough from their little dairy farm to live comfortably, pay their interest and enjoy occasional luxuries. Now the mortgage will be wiped off- Although she has planned many things, Airs Sinton has mixed feelings about her good hick. At times she is dubious, ever, sceptical, and she says she will not be easy about things until she gets her hands on the money. The ticket has boon posted through a bank and within a week or so there is to be a big party in the Sinton home.
