ON WANGANUI TRACKS

TRAINING OPERATIONS YESTERDAY MORNING’S WORK

(By

“Kestrel.”)

Fine weather prevailed for training operations yesterday morning, when several Wanganui horses with engagements at Levin and Feilding were sent along at a fast clip. Number one track was used and proved in splendid order, but it was not till after breakfast that anything of a searching nature was asked. Working before breakfast as usual, Walter Rayner gave Pomp, Pedestal, Solange and Impetus useful work, the first three named hitting out well in good pace work. They are engaged at Feilding and will, all going well in the meantime, make the journey for that fixture. Queanbeyan was another that worked early, the Australian-bred mare hitting out well. Hinewai covered five furlongs without being asked to make time. Knollmere was out soon after the breakfast interval, but was only given useful work. He looks in good order for his task at Feilding, where he is engaged in the Aorangi Trial, but will meet several with a considerable amount of racing experience. Zarene was another who was not asked to do anything serious, being trotted around on the plough. Half-pace work was allotted to Paratoo, who looks well after his racing at Trentham and Riccarton. Auctioneer (J. Barry) conceded Onepai (lightweight) about three lengths start over six furlongs, but was still a length behind at the finish, though he was not kicked up. The first furlong took J3see., the first quarter 25see., the three furlongs 37sec., and the half-mile a tick under 50see., the full distance being covered in Imin. 17sec. Both went well, and Onepai looks like developing into a useful sort. He will be at Levin and Feilding, while Auctioneer will be at both centres also. Arisus was accompanied by a Tonbridge gelding in a sprint over three furlongs, which they covered in 38

Fcrnden, with a lightweight in the saddle, was sent seven furlongs and covered the distance in Imin. 34 l-ssec. Ro was slow over the first furlong, taking 13 l-ssec.. while the first quarter took 26sec. Then hp reached the end of half • mile in 51 1-osec.. taking 1.5 for the five furlongs and was not hurried over the final stages. He was hitting out freely all the way and could have done a good deal better if he had had a companion. It is understood that he will be a certain starter in the Levin Handicap on Saturday. Korokio was given a circuit at halfpace and a spurt up the straight.
