CYLINDER WINS

DEFEAT OF NIGHTMARCH

C.J.C. MEETING CONCLUDES METROPOLITAN TO MY OWN. HAVERING A WINNER. (soecial to "Chronicle’’) CHRISTCHURCH. Nov. 15. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s spring meeting was concluded to-day with an average last-day attendance A strong north-west wind made the conditions unpleasant. The totalisator dropped to £46,149 from £64.431 10s on the corresponding day last year, the total for the meeting being £161,857, against £219,104 10s last year. The success of Cylinder in the G. G. Stead Gold Cup was well received, the crowd giving him a great cheer, which was repeated after the cup had been presented by Lady Bledisloc in the birdcage. Hector Gray, his rider, was singled out for special treatment, as i the public would no: be satisfied till I he had come out from the jockeys' loom to receive a special cheer. Make Up Wins Nicely. Make Up (£740), Disrank (£570) and Paris (£564) were best backed in the Port Cooper Hurdles. Amorist led past the stand hurdles, where Diana’s End fell. Amorist went on from Antrim Boy, Make Up. and Pangolin till five furlongs from home, when Antrim Boy took charge. He was in front at tin* last hurdle when he ami Pangolin fell. Make Up was left in charge and won easily by three lengths from Disrank. who beat Amorist home by half a length. Paris was next. Membo gave a shockingly bad display of jumping. Make Up ran in wonderfully improve! form compared with j the first day. Diana’s Lad broke a leg | when he fell ami he was shot. Shaw, the rider of Pangolin, was taken to hospital with a bruised spine. | the result of a kick from his mount | when he fell. An Outsider Gets Home. Al Jolson (£1574), Merry Cry (£878) and Compris (£579) were best backed in the Seymour Handicap, Sapient (£171) being one of the outsiders. Painkiller and Tippling were soon in charge with Al Jolson, Red Royal and Pixie Gold handy. Merry Cry ran through fast after going two furlongs and was out clear at the home turn, where he ran off the course. Sapient and Projection then moved up ami Sapient took charge on reaching the straight to win by two lengths. Pro jection beat Painkiller by a neck, with Compris staying on for fourth, tw » lengths away, just in front of Al J<>!son, Red Royal and Ben Hur. The winner had not previously shown form this season. It looked as if Merry Cry would have won easily had he kept straight. The Grecian the Consistent. Meprisant (£1308), Habit (£1251). and Noteworthy (£646) were the popular picks in the Cressy* Handicap. Habit and Miss Ransom led Compensa tion and Lord Thomond all the way to the straight, where Meprisant also showed up, with Grecian handy. Grecian went to the front when fairly in the straight, while Greenaway and First Raid joined the next bunch at the distance. Grecian went on to win decisively by a short length from Greenaway, who stayed on to beat First Raid by a neck, while half a length away there was nothing to choose between Habit, Miss Ransom and Lord Thomond, with Compensation and Miss Mercia close up. Grecian showed great dash in the straight. Greenaway should win soon. Meprisant began slowly and though prominent at the home turn could not go on. His turn will come later as he is a good galloper when at his best. Solvent Superior. Solvent (£1268), the Cape Gold-Mari-time bracket and Type (£786), were fancied for the Pioneer Handicap. Grecian Prince and Maritime led to the course proper with Last March and Solvent going well behind them. Grecian Prince bored Maritime out and Solvent went on to beat Last March by a length. Grecian Prince was two lengths away, a head in front ot Maritime, with the others strung out. Solvent gave further evidence of being above the average. She stays on well. Maritime was very unlucky ami would have been hard to beat if he had escaped the unwelcome attentions of Grecian Prince. Outside the first £our nothing ever got into the picture. My Own Just Gets There. The Vertigcrn-Count Palatine bracket carried £1963 in the Metropolitan Handicap, with Historic (£1285) and Merry Ftamon (£908) next. White Fang streaked away at the start and at the end of three furlongs he had a lead of six lengths from 51} Own and Gay Crest, with Star Stranger ami Merry Damon next. There was not much change half a mile from home, where White Fang still was several lengths in front, but he was beaten at tin* entrance to the straight, where Vertigern. Count Palatine. Paquito ami Historic were closing up. My Own was just showing out from a big bunch a* the distance and she hung on to win by a head from Star Stranger, who beat Count Palatine by a similar margin. Gay Crest was two lengths away, a head in front of Vertigern. wi'a Paquito, Merry Damon and Historic next. It was a fine race but Count Palatine lost his great chance through failing to come home straight. He bored in on .Vertigern in the closing stages. Thrfii tn Stead Cup. The G. G. Stead (’up provided a thrill in the defeat of Nightmarch. who was a hot favourite. Nightmarch led out from Toxeuma and Cylinder. The pace was very slow in the early stages. Toxeuma joined Nightmarch after going three furlongs and was in front at the six-furlong post. He was a length clear of Night march at the home turn, with Cylinder two lengths further back. Nightmarch soon settled Toxeuma when the straight was reached but Cylinder then came on the scene with a strong challenge. He was almost on terms with the favourite a furlong from the post and, keeping up his run. he beat Nightmarch by a neck. Toxeuma was

three lengths away. It was a good performance on the part of Cylinder in what was really only a seven-furlong race. It looked, however, as if Nightmarch would have won had he gone right on when he had Toxeuma beaten. Cylinder’s win was greeted with prolonged cheering. Favourites Pay Dividends. Spoon (£1432) was a little better backed than Appledore (£1294) in the Stonyhurst Handicap, with Jenny Diver (£649) third fancy. Charmainc was first to show out, Ilkley being next at the end of a furlong. Ilkley took charge at the five-furlong post and led Charinaine. Spoon and Ball Dress round the turn, with Applcdore closing up. Ilklev was done with when the straight was reached. Spoon then headed Charmainc but she had o be ridden out to win by half a length from Appledore. who beat Charmainc by a neck. Ball Dress was three lengths away, fourth. The winner’s performance was a good one. If kept to races up to a mile in the meantime she will win plenty- of monev. Appledore ran a solid race and inav be good with a bit of age. Charinaine will be an early winner in the South. Limerick’s brother, Dunraven. was in the field, but he is only a moderate. > Havering Takes the Last. Arrow Lad (1793). Ha wring (£1173 :. and Te Awahina (£1155) were best backed in the Members’ Handicap, with Meadow Lark also in strong favour. Meadow Lark and Great Star were first out but Great Star soon went on in front, Jaloux being next at the end of two furlongs. with Te Awahina, Royal Parade and Ranclagh next. Great* Star retired when the straight was reached, while Havering and Admiral Drake moved up, Royal Parade and Meadow Lark being other* prominent. These four had the finish to themselves. Havering stalled off Admiral Drake by a neck, while ovw a length away Royal Parade beat Meadow Lark by a head. Havering bad improved with each race. Admiral Drake was wonderfully consistent, and so was Arrow Lad for three davs. but he never looked dangerous in this race. Meadow Lark nearly at his best now. Te Awhin i was jamc after the race.
