RECORDED MUSIC
THE WEEK’S NEW RECORDS HIS MASTER’S VOICE Popular Overture National Symphony Orchestra in “The Barber of Seville,” overture (Rossini). This brilliant overture has been finely recorded by Zonophone (5569). At the Harp John Cockerill (harp solos) in “Annie Laurie” (Douglas) and “Last Rose of Summer” (Moore). You must make a special point of hearing this record. A typical Zone, novelty number by a leading harpist and perfectly recorded (5578). Cornet Solos
Sylvester Ahola, in “Beneath Thy Window” (“O Sole Mio”) (Di Capua) and “Mattinata” (Leoncavallo). The cornet gives full expression to such melodies as these, especially when played by an artist such as Ahola. (Zonophone 5609). Cinema Organ Delights
Sydney Gustard, at the organ of Trocadero Cinema, Liverpool, in “Air de Ballet” (Chaminade), and “Phantom Melody” (Ketelbey). Sydney Gustard’s previous record was a great success. The amazing variety of effects and his clever, fascinating style, found favour in the cars of all who hoard it- This record is, if anything, better. (H.M.V., 8.3277).
Frank Crumit Laughs Frank Crumit (comedian), in “Down by the Railroad Track” and “Around the Corner- ’ ’
Frank has given us two narratives this time. Of course, they are humourous and delivered in Crumit’s own inimitable style. Hear how the courtship flourished “Down by the Railroad Track.” (H.M.V., E.A. 762).
Good Tenor Songs Herbert Thorpe (tenor, in “Only You” (Schneider) and “For Ever and Ever” (Tosti). These arc line old songs, well sung and recorded. (Zone. 5610). Male Duets
McCravy Bros., with harmonica, violin, and banjo, in “Dip Me in the Golden Sea,” coupled with the Carter Family (vocal) in “The Foggy Mountain Top.” Good numbers- The Carter Family is excellent. (Zono. E.E.210).
Popular Melodies Orchestrated Zonophone Salon Orchestra, in 44 Eleanor” (Deppen) and “Evensong” (.Easthope Martin). Two popular melodies cleverly orchestrated and recorded. (Zono. 5574). Revue Hits on the Wurlltzer Edward O’Henry at the organ of “Madame Tussaud’s” Cinema, London, 44 Dream Lover” (film, “The Love Parade’’), and “Just as We Used to Do” (“C. B. Cochran’s 1930 Revue”). O’Henry has gone to two very popular shows for the subject matter of his new record. ‘Dream Lover” on the cinema organ is irresistible. (H.M.V8.3428). Famous Old Comic Opera Zonophone Light Opera Company, in Vocal Gems from “Les Cloches de Corneville” (Planquette). This famous old comic opera has recorded beautifully. (Zono. A. 384). Two Fine Songs Barrington Hooper (tenor), in ‘ 1 Angels Guard Thee” (“Jocelyn”) (Godard), and “Eily Mavourneen” (“Lily of Killarncy”) (Benedict). Hooper here is at the top of his form. These old favourites were well worth re-rceording. (Zono. A. 390).
Ideal Duettists Esther Coleman and Foster Richardson, in 1 ‘The Voyagers” (Sanderson) and 44 Mountain Lovers” (Squire). These are ideal duettists, and two fine numbers. (Zono. 5546). 44 Sons o’ Guns”
