HARNESSING THE WAITAKI FOR HYDRO-ELECTRIC DEVELOPMENT.— For over two years there has been in progress work on one of the greatest engineering projects ever undertaken in Zealand—the harnessing of the Waitaki River for the production of electricity. Although the construction of the dam is far from complete, good progress is being made with other branches of the work. The picture on the left shows the construction of the towers for the outdoor switching station, which is below the power-house. On the right is a photograph showing the erection of dwellings for the permanent staff. Mr. R. H. Packwood, engineer-in-charge of the work, lives in the house on the extreme right, and in the foreground is the hostel in course of construction for single men.
