THE NEED FOR CAPITAL
THE need for further supplies of capital together with talk of confiscation in the shape of repudiation are odd companions in the world to-day. The connection between the two, the provision of capital and the repudiation of national indebtedness, does not, apparently, appeal - to be realised. The man who .saves, defers for himself the pleasure of spending. But when this deferred pleasure is taken from him he no longer feels the urge to save, and therefore he does not accumulate fresh capital. Repudiation robs the man who has saved, but by discouraging further savings it also robs the repudiator of fresh supplies of capital. When a community is in need of fresh capital, therefore, it is the height of folly to talk of repudiation. Mr Lang, now he is in office in New South Wales, will doubtless appreciate that fact.
