MODERN ELECTIONERING

The loud speaker and the microphone have made a great change at political meetings. Hitherto a speaker had to strain his voice to be heard, but during the recent Canadian elections a microphone was put on the platform in the Quebec hall from which the candidates spoke and loud speakers distributed around the building. Down the six streets leading to it motor-cars parked solidly from kerb to kerb and heard the speech from loud speakers on the telephone poles. A new technique is being fostered in the art of public speikirtf, for j.ersonal magnetism is now excess baggage. In addition the speaker has to keep his audience really interested or it will switch over from a discussion on unemployment to jazz coming from a highpowered station. It took a bold indi vidual to get up and walk out when the speech bored him. The bored list oner now simply turns the dials.
