WANGANUI ASSOCIATION FIRST MATCHES COMPLETED. RESULTS ON SATURDAY. In spite of the fact that the weather on Saturday morning was not by any means promising for cricketers, it cleared in the afternoon and the Wanganui Cricket Association was enabled to get the first matches completed. On the whole, the displays of batting and bowling were an improvement on the previous Saturday, and it was evident that some of the colts will this season be found taking a prominent part in cricket affairs. Resuming their first innings against Technical College Old Boys with six wickets down for 130, Old Boys 32 runs before the innings closed, Handley, one of the not out men the previous Saturday, carried his bat for a dozen, nicely compiled, while J. Ellis accounted for 15. Of the wickets two were taken by Scoullar and C. Smith added another to five already down to his credit. Technical College Old Boys, who had been dismissed for 89 runs in their first innings notched 134 in their second effort, the principal contributors to the total being R. Mete Kingi (23), C. Smith (21), S. D. Stewart (18).. and K. Scoullar and C Spriggens (12 each). The last named batsman scored a nice “six,” which accounted for half his score. Gee secured seven wickets for 50 runs and did best of the Old-Bovs trundlers. Left with 70 runs to got to top their opponents’ aggregate. Old Boys secured them with seven wickets still intact. Bullock Douglas, who hit two “sixes,” being still unbeaten when the enR came. C. Smith took the three wickets that fell. When stumps were drawn in the Wanganui v. Technical College match the previous Saturday W. Thrush (12) and Darby (18) had accounted for the 30 runs to the credit of Wanganui and were still going strong. They continued to be enterprising on the resumption and Thrush had carried his score to 46. including one “six,’’ before he was dismissed, whereas Darby had an appeal for l.b.w. decided against him when he had added 5 runs. It was left to G. Thrush (21) and Morgan (28) to notch the runs that went a long way to swell the innings total to 155. making their aggregate for two efforts 216. Dismissed in the first innings for 45 runs Technical College did much bettor in the second, for after Gregory had been caught out for 15 and five wickets wore down for 26, J. Mete Kingi and M. Luxford were associated in a partnership that materially altered the complexion of the game, the former having 44 runs and Luxford 24 when rain caused stumps to bo drawn with 193 runs on the board without further loss. Mete Kingi hit seven fours. W. Thrush took three of the wickets for 17 runs and Spurdie two for 15. Thus Wanganui won by 16 runs on the first innings. The one-day game on the Collegiate School ground between United and the Collegiate XI resulted in a draw, with United just eight runs short of notching a win. The Collegiate XI ran up a score of 52 before their last wicket fell, the veteran Holland taking six wickets for 15 runs and Wood securing four for 31. Batting for United, Sewell was run out when he had scored 11. and Wood (21) and Holland (12) knocked up the remaining runs without being separated. .The following are details of the scores:—
