CUP TO NIGHTMARCH

C.J.C. MEETING OPENS Some Surprises at Riccarton The spring racing campaign in New Zealand was advanced still further on Saturday, when the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting was commenced. The New Zealand Cup resulted in the hot favourite, Nightmarch, winning comfortably from Concentrate and In the Shade. Thus the Melbourne Cup winner of last year has emulated the feat of Sasanof, while he has also set a new record for weightcarrying in the big Bieearton event. The Stewards’ Handicap was won by Autopay and the Welcome Stakes by Tea Chat, this pair proving surprise packets of double-figure dimensions. Cylinder and Paratoo made friends for the N.Z. Derby by winning nicely. At Whangarei the concluding day of the spring meeting resulted in a couple’"of surprises. The V.R.C. meeting at Flemington was also concluded. New Zealand was represented directly by First Acre, the “Iron Horse,” who put up a new Australasian record when he won the V.R.C. Handicap. The all-conquering Phar Lap added further to his great record by winning the C. B. Fisher Plate.
