JEW’S NEW YEAR

BAN UPON WRITING. More than 5000 .Tews in Newcastle alone were not allowed to write or handle a pen during their New Year celebrations, lasting from September 22 until two days later. The restriction was imposed upon all .Tews at this festival, and is faithfully adhered to by all bona-fide members of the community. • In addition to interfering with business the rule created a difficulty for .Tews who were unemployed, and who, in the normal course, had to sign the register at the employment exchange. An agreement was made with the authorities for an alternative method to signing.
