THE CIVIC THEATRE “MOTHER’S BOY” A singer of brilliance and an actor of attractive personality and mimetic talent, Morton Downey, who created a sensation in the Club Cassanova in New York, will be seen in Pathe talking and singing picture productions throughout the current screen season. Mr Downey is starred in the Pathe dialogue picture “Mother’s Boy” a Robert T. Kane production which will be seen and heard at. the Civic Theatre this evening and tomorrow evening. “Mother’s Boy,” written by Gene Markey is the story of a young tenement dweller in New York who begins his career as a delivery boy in delicatessen store. His singing attracts the attention of a poor violinist who undertakes to train him for an operatic career. Owing to a theft committed by his rascally brother, he quits his home under a cloud and while his doting mother grieves for him, he carves out his career and wins. There is a strong love interest in the story which has been finely developed by Director Bradley Barker MARTON COURT Mr R. M. Watson, S.M. persided over the usual fortnightly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. Judgment by default was given in the following undefended civil cases: G. Bevan v. T. Arapere £3 15s, costs £2 7s 6d; G. Bevan v. H. Tawhiri £lO, costs £2 7s 6d; Robinson’s Cut Rate Stores v. Thompson £l3 Ils, costs 10s; T. McChesney v. J. Kumeroa £37 10s, costs £4 8s 6dFor riding a cycle without a light, Ray Whale was convicted as a first offender, and fined 10s. W. Manning was convicted and fined 10s for driving a car without a mirror attached. Mrs H. T. E. Willis for breaking the traffic regulations in that she drove out of Lower High Street and out the traffic dome badly was convicted and fined 10s, costs 12s. Whale Bros, were proceeded against for driving an unroadworthy motor vehicle and they were convicted and fined 20s with costs 12s.
Wallace Holland (Rata), a lorry driver, was proceeded against by the traffic inspector, for negligent driving. The evidence showed that ho was proceeding along Calico Lino from Marton and passed a mob of sheep at an excessive speed, thereby killing the drover’s dog. Evidence was given by the drover Wm. Carey, the traffic inspector and J. H. McLean. He was convicted and ordered to pay Court costs 15s. He has since been dismissed from his employment. Holland was also proceeded against by the traffic inspector for negligent driving on another occasion, in that he failed to keep a proper look-out at a bend in Tnrakina, and ran into a lorry driven by one Jacobsen. He pleaded guilty and the traffic inspector recommended that his Worship should take a lenient view, since the accused had now lost his employment and was a married man with a family. He was fined 20s and expenses 17s. TRINITY COLLEGE OF MUSIC LOCAL EXAMINATIONS The following are the results of the examination held at Marton on Monday, September 22, by Dr- J. E. GOLF In the first round of the Southern Hawke’s Bay ladies’ golf championship at Dannevirke, Miss B. Gaisford (Marton) defeated Mrs Trevor 9 up and 8» Three Marton men participated in the Hokowhitu handicap match at Palmerston North on Tuesday. In the first round R. Fullorton-Smith defeated J. M. Hussey (Wanganui) and he also survived the second round defeating E. Parsons (Waverley). F. J. Christensen was defeated in the first round by L. M. Geison (Feilding), but A.
