LAND VALUES
Sir, —I wish to disagree with a statement made at the Development League’s meeting the other night. A gentleman said that two and a half sheep country was not worth more than seven to nine pounds per acre to-day. I think he would find it very hard to find a man willing to sell at less than double that figure. I have farmed two sheep country at £2O per acre with fat lambs at 13s 6d and woo] under Is. I will agree that it cost less to run a farm at that time (about 1912) but he would be a poor farmer that could not show a profit on 2| sheep country at £l6 per acre to day. PRACTICAL FARMER. RABBITS Sir, —Being one of the ratepayers under the 'Wanganui Rabbit Board, I write to protest against the unfair and Sir, —I wish to disagree with a statethis district. Part one of the Rabbit Nuisance Act, 1908, clauses eleven and twelve, provides that on any property on which rabbits are found, the sheep inspector for the district can give the owner notice to destroy them and if he does not do so, can put on rabbiters and charge the owner with the cost. This is a much fairer way than the present board, as the owner who lets the rabbits increase will have to pay to destroy them, and not rate the owner who has no rabbits. Under the present board we have men put on as rabbiters, with no one to look after them. If rabbiters were put on by the sheep inspector on any property, and the owner had to pay them, he would see that they did their work thoroughly. Rabbits have been on tho sandy part of my property at Waitotara for thirty years to my knowledge and have not increased. The Rabbit Board system is a most wasteful one. Tho members of the board seem to be in favour of it because they receive a Government subsidy. They forget that the producers have to find that subsidy. G .V PEARCE.
