VICTORY FOR GOSS
MANAWATU CHAMPIONSHIP WANGANUI MAN’S WIN EPIC STRUGGLE IN FINAL. (Special to ‘'Chronicle.’’) PALMERSTON N., Sept. 24. The Manawatu golf tourney was concluded to-day. In the championship J. Goss (Wanganui) beat D. C. Collins (Wairarapa) on the 20th. green after a hard-fought contest. In the Hokowhitu Handicap, H. Bradmorc (Waverley) beat E. W- Clark (Levin) 1 up.. The semi-final game between Goss and Quin was hard-fought. Gos& was on top mo3t of the time. Quin was shaky with his wood but made great recovery with the irons- Both had fair drives at the first; on in two and down in four. Goss was lucky with his drive at the second, being off the line to the left with, a long low ball which hit the back of a bunker and bounced on to the fairway. Both were on with their seconds and down in four. The third was halved in 4 and the Willows in threes, Quin laying an awkward second dead from the corner of a bunker. Quin was in trouble at Strange’s play ing out to the right and finding the bunker on the edge of tho green with his third. Goss got “screamers” down tho fairway but was weak with his third. Quin got out of tho bunker wellGoss was short with his approach putt and Quin laid him a half stymie which Goss negotiated to take the holo in 5. Quin sliced his drive at the next btu his second was short of the green Goss was under tho pin with his second. Quin played a chip to within two feet of the pin. Gosb was short with his next. Quin’s putt stopped three inches from the hole and was another halfstymie. Goss lipped the hole and it was halved in fivers.
Goss put his first out of bounds at Riverside. Goss got on to the second but topped his brassie into the sough. Quin played safe with his iron, just 'short of the green. Goss was weak with his next;but Quin’s approach kicked to the left but the fourth was bv the hole,
which Goss conceded—all square. Quin was short at Monro’s but chipped to within five feet of the pin. Goss finished pin high, 15 feet to the left, with his tee shot, and putted to the hole. Quin missed and Goss was one up. The ninth was halved in threes- Both were to the right at the tenth. Goss approached to within nine feet and Quid was on but short. Goss sank his putt to take the hole in 3, being two up. The drives at Land’s End were down the fairway. Quin was on, seven yards fhort, with his second but Goss’ ball rolled over the bank. His approach was strong and Quin laid his dead in Goss’ line, taking the hole in 4 and reducing the lead to one. Both were on in one at the next but Quin had three putts and lost the hole, Goss again being two up. At Titi’s both played long balls, the second being short of the green. Quin laid his approach dead and was down ii 4 to take the hole.
Quin pushed his drive out to the right at the next. Goss topped his, going through the trees into the rough. Goss played a good second. Quin hooked his into the rough to the left of ths green, approaching well and sinking a long putt for a half. Quin played perfect golf at the fifteenth and sank another long putt to take the hole in 3—all square. Both got “screamers” away at the next. Goss played a perfect iron to within 14 feet of the pin, Quin being on the edge of the green. Quin took three putts and lost the hole. Goss was again one up.
At the 17th. Goss drove down the fairway, Quin being in the rough, but he played a nice second to the edge of the green. Goss was short with his second but lai-J his next five feet from the pin, but missed the putt, Quin squaring the game again with a four. Goss was on with his second at 18th Quin’s approach rolled over the bank to tho right. His next, however, was close to the pin. Gosg overran the hole. Quin laid him a stymie (.nd they halved in fives. At the 19th. both were t? the right, Goss being on with his second but Quin wa sthrough and short with h ; » third. Goss laid hi pur.t dead. Quin missed, Goss winning the hole and the match. Quin went round in 76 and Goss in To the Twentieth Green. The final was an epic struggle won by Gvss at the 20th. green after Collins had him dormy. Collins played great golf but was unfortunate in finding a bunker with a long drive at tho 16th giving Gosa a chance, and the Wanganui man went on to pull the game out of the fire. Bothwere to the right with their drives at the first and past the pin with their seconds, Goss being in a bunker. Goss was well out but overran. Both took three putts, Collins winning in 5 to 6. Both played long balls at ths second, , Collins approaching to within five feet
