MUSIC WEEK

Wlr, —T was surprised to read In ywr paper of the 15th inst., under Publie Opinion a letter signed “Musical.” The writer is qui' unfair to the promoters of this enterprise. On reference to the week’s a gramme as published in your paper, i* will be seen that the programme •» be given is of a varied character, and I am sure the organisers have considered the public when drafting this very fine programme to be staged. The objects of music week are to try and get the public to take a greater interest in music, not “jazz.” I is expected hat the venture will 4 receive from the public the support the object merits. On looking over the programme it will be seen that there are several soloists, including instrumental. Among the names are Frances Bridges, Owen Williams and that brilliant cornet player Gordon Bergcrson. Then, besides choirs and orchestras, we have our two organ-like bands; Wanganui Garrison Band with its old record of contest work, and tho Queen Alexandra’s Own Band, with its up-to-date contest record. I am sure that if .“Musical’’ attended last Sunday evening’s concert in the Opera House, he would have been more than delighted with the tone and style of this band. The task of trying to satisfy all types of listeners is superhuman, but nevertheless, we are all impressed with the bands’ improvement both iif tone and style. I, therefore, hope that the lovers of good music win give their patronage to this great effort df endeavouring to further improve our musical organisations, and make It be truly said that Wanganui is tho home of musicians in thia Dominion. —I am, etc., HARMONY.
