HARBOUR BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING HELD OFFICERS’ REPORTS The monthly meeting of the Wanganui Harbour Board was held yesterday, Mr J. T. Hogan, M.P., presiding. There were also present, Messrs W. S. Glenn, P. Higginbottom, J. Patterson, W. J. Rogers, R. Farley, W. Morrison, D. Ross, R. Farley and J. Morrison. The following two reports were received and adopted:— ENGINEER’S REPORT Th© resident engineer (Mr H. V. M. Haszard) reported as follows: — Dredging: The cleaning up of the tug berth has been completed at the Meuli Wharf. No. 2 wharf berthage has also been cleaned up. The entrance to the basin is being widened slightly to give a better approach to No. 2 wharr. This work will be completed in a few days- The quantity dredged during the month was 5544 cubic yards. Expenditure: Labour £136 11s sd; material £2 15s Bd. Total £139 7s Id.

“Kaione”: The dredge, after completing an overhaul at Wellington, was handed over to the charterers on the 9th of the month. Expenditure on account of overhaul £156 17s 7d. “Kahanui”: The annual overhaul of the vessel was completed, any further work can come under the heading of ordinary maintenance. Entrance groyne: A number of extra stiffening braces and additional bolts are being put into this structure. are proving effective in making tne groyne more rigid and may obviate the driving of extra piles. Expenditure, labour £l6 7s 7d, material £8 14s 6d. Total £25 2s Id.

Castlecliff wharves: Some new fenders were put in and a number of others are being packed out to correct the alignment. A number of holts in the sub-structure have been found to be broken- These are being renewed as opportunity offers. Expenditure, labour £l7 4s 4d, material 5s 2d. Total £l7 9s 6d. Anchorage beacon north beach: During a very heavy southerly gale, tne front anchorage beacon was blown overExpenditure, labour £9 6s lid, materiel 10s. Total £9 16s lid. Slipyay: The lighter morning lignt was slipped during the month. Expenditure, labour £5 11s 9d, material £1 19s lOd. Total £7 11 7d. HARBOURMASTER’S REPORT

The Harbour Master (Capt. White) reported as follows: “Entrance: Soundings were obtained at the entrance as follows: July Sth: 20ft. 9in. h.w.o-s.t., 17ft. 9in- h.w.n.t-, 12ft. 9in. 1-w.o.s.t; July 14, 21ft 3in«, h.w.o.s-t., 18ft. 3in. h.w.n.t., 13ft. 3in., 1.w.0.5-t.; July 21, 23ft. h.w.os.t., 20ft., h.w.n.t., 15ft 1-w.0.5.t.; July 31, 23ft. 6 in., h.w-o.s.t-, 20ft. 6in., h.w.n.t.,, 15ft. 6in. 1-w.o.s.t.

From end of moles to Castlecliff Wharf: The least depth of water on the lines of leaders is 20ft 6in. at h.w.o.s.t. and 17ft. 6in. at h.w-n.t. and 12ft. 6in. at 1.w.0-s.t. The navigable channel to the north of leaders has 21ft 6in. at h.w-o.s.t- and 18ft 6in. at h.w.n.t. River channel: The least depth of water between the Castlecliff Wharf and Town Wharf is 14ft at h.w.o.s.t. and lift at h.w.n.tTown Wharf: The least deptn of water in the berthage at this wharf is 14ft. at h.w.o.s-t. and lift at h.w.n.t. Gas Wharf: The least depth of water at this wharf is 15ft 6in- at h.w.o.s.t-, and 12ft. 6in. at h.w.n.t. Oil Wharf: The least depth of water at this wharf is 15ft. Gin. at n.w-(?.S.t« and 9ft. at L.w.o.s-t. Imlay Wharf: The least depth of water in the berthage at this wharf is 12ft. 6in. at h.w.b.s-t. and 9ft. 6in at h.w.n.t.
