NOTED ACTRESS DEAD
■JO,” THE CROSSING SWEEPER. Miss Jenny Lee, the actress, who for 20 years of a long stage career played all over the world the part of *Jo,” the crossing sweeper in Dickens’ “Bleak House,” died recently in London at the age of 72. It was while in San Francisco in 1875 that shs made her first appearance in 2he part. Miss Lee had married Mr J. P. Burnett, the dramatic author and actor, who wrote the stage version of “Bleak House,” and directly following her appearance in “Jack the Giant Killer” at tne Surrey Theatre on her return to London they got the play staged at the Globe Theatre, Miss Lee taking the part of Jo. The play ran in London for a year, and in the provinces for five years. Miss Lee had n.uch personal bad luck, losing valuable belongings in a fire in New York, and money in Australia when a bank crashed. Miss Lee, who was a pensioner of King George’s Pension Fund for Actors, had on three occasions been reported dead, the last time being when her name was conftfsed with that of Jennie Lee, the film star.
