NORTH AND SOUTH DRAW

FAST GAME AT NELSON. COMBINATION PLEASES. I Per Press Association. | NELSON, Aug. 16. The annual match between tho hockey representatives of the North and South Island was played at Trafalgar Park this afternoon in dull but fine weather and in the presence of between 600 and 700 spectators, who were treated to a fast, open exhibition of tho game. Considering that it is tho first time the teams have been together surprisingly good combination was shown, particularly by the North. The game, which ended in a draw, one goal each, just about indicated the respective merits of the opposing teams. In the first spell North had a good deal the better of play and Rushbridge scored the only goal. The second half, however, saw South to much better advantage and had their forwards a little more finish they must have scored several times. However, after a series of strong attacks, Fullwood equalised the scores.

South pressed from the start and North had to concede a corner, from which their forwards swept up field. Robinson centering well but Dash cleared. B. Spiers and Botts were prominent for North but the South defence was very solid. A shot by B. Spiers went over the crossbar and a later shot by Packer went the same way. A forward rush by South was stopped by P. Spiers and play was taken to the South circle, where Packer’s shot rebounded of Rushbridge’s pad and was netted. From a solid South attack P. Spiers cleared well and before half-time Packer had two unsuccessful shots. On resuming the North forwards set the pace, a shot by Robinson going wide. South retaliated and frem a corner Whitwell sent in a hard shot which went wide. From his own twenty-five B. Spiers took play to the opposing circle, where his shot was brilliantly saved by Snook. After several hard forward rushes by South Hughes stopped a shot with his pads but Fullwood, lying handy, took the rebound and scored, making the sebre ono all. South wore attacking when the final whistle went.

For North P. Spiers, Ewan and Mahoney were prominent backs and Robinson, B. Spiers. Packer and Betts good forwards, and for South Dash, Rogers, and Gibbs (backs), and Bay, Fullwood and Whitewoll (forwards) were best. The referees were Messrs C. Sara (Buller) and O. Mullins (Nelson).
