CHALLENGE FAILS

RANFURLY SHIELD MATCH SOUTHLAND AND HAWKE’S BAY FOUR PENALTY KICKS [ Per Press Association ) INVERCARGILL, Aug. 16. The third. challenge match for the Ranfurly Shield between Southland and Hawke’s Bay was played at Rugby Park to-day, and resulted in a win for the holders by 9 points to 6. playing conditions were almost perfect, there being no sun or wind. The attendance was estimated at 7000. The only sensation was when Wanoa was ordered off. It was early evident that the visitors were out for the Shield, and the team fielded was their best combination. Bay had the lead with 6 points to nil at half-time, and a. ere unlucky in not making it larger. Southland won with three penalty kicks to a try and a penalty. They could not cross the line, bu. their back play was superior. Bay kept the play as tight as possible, and tried little open work. Although it was an even game it nearly went to ’Hawke’s Bay, who put in the most determined bid yet made for the Shield this season. The match was grimly spectacular, with interest always tense. Bay’s kicking was superlative and constantly changed defence into attack. There were several stoppages for injuries, and Gillespie had to be carried off.

After Wanoa was ordered off the advantage of play swung in Southland’s direction, and many exciting movements were witnessed. Too much cannot be said for Bay’s defence, which time after time averted what looked like certain tries. Brownlie and Grenside impressed in a side that played as a team. Hazlett and Bell headed many movements for Southland, vhile all the backs handled well. An advantage in weight frequently gave Bay predominance in line-outs and scrums. The teams were as follows:

Southland: Norris, Diack, Porter, Geddes, Niven, Sharpe, Holden, L. G Jorge, C. George, Galt, McKenzie, Hazlett, Purdue, Metcalfe, Bell.

Hawke’s Bay: Evans, Harvey, Grenside, Gillespie, Setford, Botherway, Geddes, Cairna, Wanoa, Brownlie, Roach, Campbell, Wilson, Rolls, Gemmell.

After the kick-off there was some give and take play. Bay had the advantage and were very dangerous. Good kicks by Bay men were followed by C. Brownlie breaking through a ruck of the forwards to score. The kick failed.

Southland then had a turn on attack, but Bay kept an impregnable defence with raking line kicks and smothering

vork. Bay worked up-field and a penilty 30 yards from Southland’s line vas converted by Grenside with a long ow kick.

There were several stoppages for injuries, and Gillespie (Bay) was finally carried off. Grant replaced him. Mucfi give and take play followed until in a Bay attacking movement several forwards piled on Norris (the Southland full-back), and Wanoa was ordered off. Bay pressed with renewed vigour, and Southland had to force. Bay were still attacking when half-time sounded, with the scores: Hawke’s Bay ... .. 6 Southland 0 Early in the second spell a rush by Southland resulted in Diack kicking a penalty in front of the posts. The reds infused more dash into their play, the backs especially moving with machine-like precision, but they were always brought up by tackling. Some Bay men offside allowed Diack to equalise the score to six all with a penalty kick. Much even play was then seen, and Southland’s backs swung into action. Bay refused to re-form a scrum, so the referee ordered a penalty, and Diack converted with a fine kick, placing Southland in the lead.

The visitors tried hard to gain the advantage, but Southland again looked dangerous, with Bell heading several movements. The ball travelled th’e width of the field in a passing rush, but Diack was pushed out at the corner. Great excitement reigned while Southland stormed Bay’s territory, both teams making the play hard and fast. The maroons always looked dangerous, but again Bay’s defence was too sound. Some pLy in neutral territory followed and the final whistle blew with Southland still the Ranfurly Shield holders, the score being: Southland ...... ...... 9 Hawke’s Bay 6 MATCH AT NEW PLYMOUTH TE AUTE DOWN HIGH SCHOOL [ Per Press Association.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 16.
