COLOURED TYRES
Tyres coloured to match motor-car bodies are the latest novelty in England. Birmingham dye experts have, it .s stated, devised shades of blue, green, maroon, and yellow for tyres, which will withstand the severest road tests. It is hoped that, the innovation will make 1931 models even more attractive than 1 hose now used. In this colourful age maybe dye-coloured tyres might find acceptance in trade circles and amongst certain motorists. Coloured covers have already been extensively used iu Australia. In 1916 and 1917 the standard Dunlop motor tyres made and sold in this country were white, whilst in 1918, the red tread Dunlop “Railroad” cover was introduced and was in popular demand right up to the introduction of the “Balloon’' type of tyre in 1924. The colour of these covers was, of course, introduced when compounding the rubber and the colour was permanent. The English suggestion, obviously, docs not apply to this method of manufacturing coloured tyres, but evidently refers to colour impregnation of surface of outside of cover by dye after its construction, somewhat after the method of applying the special tyre paints marxeted today. With the use of penetrating dyes
the colour would no doubt, be more permanent. Further details of the Birmingham experiments will be awaited by many motorists with interest.
