SOUTH TARANAKI

PATEA BOROUGH QUESTIONS There still seems to bo some difficulty in the way of the Borough Council towards helping the unemployed of Patca. At a special meeting last Monday night, the Mayor presiding over a full attendance of the Council, reports wore handed in by the engineer and street supervisor on the visit by Mr Hermanson, assistant Public Works engineer, from Wanganui. Mr Herman son had viewed the Heads Road and had stated that it was not properly laid. He would, however, advise the Council.

In the matter of planting of trees at the Domain it was decided to set the unemployed on this work on condition the £2 for £1 subsidy would bo available. It was generally agreed that preferably married men be put on the jobs of the Heads Road and the tree planting, while single men could go to the Public Works on on the Waitotara Valley Road. The streets supervisor stated that if Mr Hermanson vetoed the unemployed being put. to work on the Heads Road, there was work to be done on Victoria Street, which would probably obtain the necessary confirmation.

The matter of a fence round the Memorial Building and Town Hall grounds was then fully discussed. Specifications for a'plain brick wall three feet high were laid before the Council, but as these did not comply with the Council’s requirements, a committee was appointed to interview Mr Jackson as to a tender for a brick fence, thiee feet high with concrete caping and every twelve feet a brick pillar. The matter of gates was held over, provision to be made for same, but in the meanwhile only a gateway to be provided. An invitation was received for all councillors to attend the annual meeting of the Patca Fire Brigade next Tuesday. Councillor Naismith brought up several small matters in connection with the erection of the new stand-pipe and ladder of the water-tower, after which the Council rose. COURSING The New Zealand Waterlog Cup that was to have been run off yesterday, was postponed on account of the weather but will be continued to-day, weather permitting.
