MUD-TIME IS HERE

AND BRINGS IN ITS TRAIN SPLASHED STOCKINGS. A little rain at this time of the year means wet, muddy streets for some days, and that means splashes from the buses and other motor traffic which is so heavy now. But here is a hint or two on how to remove those horrid mud- stains efficiently. Whatever the material, let the stain dry first, and then brush well with a good stiff brush. The next treatment will depend on the material. Rub dark garments with a cut potato. Let them dry and the deposit of starch from the potato and the remaining mud will then easily brush away. Sponge woollen goods with borax and water. If the colours are fast, a little ammonia could be added. For silk articles add a few drops of ammonia to a little hot coffee, soak a flannel in this, and then sponge over the stains. Often nowadays the mud splashes are greasy. To remove these from washable materials rub with glycerine and water, and then wash out with warm water and plenty of soap. Non-washable things should be sponged carefully with turpentine.
