SHEEPSKINS AND HIDES

WELLINGTON SALE On Thursday the Wellington brokers held the fortnightly sale of sheepskins, hides, and tallow, fair-sized catalogues being offered. There was little, if any, change in prices. Dalgety and Co., Ltd. report that the demand for all grades of sheepskins was excellent and good clearances were made at prices fully up to late rates, with the exception of inferior, seedy, and damaged parcels, which were at times n Id lower. Salted skins sold on a par. Supplies of hides were smaller than usual. Values for heavies were par to jd better, lights id, while mediums ruled par. Kip and yearling sold up to previous quoted rates. Calf were dull of sale, prices being fully |d per lb lower. Tallow: The demand was fairly good and prices were without much change from last sales auction level. The following is the range of prices:— Sheepskins.—Halfbred, 7jd; fine crossbred, 74d, 8d; medium crossbred, sid, 7|d; coarse crossbreds, sd, 7d; half-wools, 4£d, 74d; quarter-wools, 4d, 6jd; pelts, 4d, 6£d; pelts, salted, not quoted; quarter-wools, 2s lOd, 4s; halfwools, 3s Bd, 4s lid; three-quarter wools, not quoted; full-wools, not quoted; extra large, not quoted; lambs, 2s, 3s 4d.

Hides.—Ox, 33 to 441bs, s£d; ox, 45 to 521bs, sid, Gid; ox, 53 to 591bs, s|d, 6|d; ox, 60 to 691bs, 6id, 7d; ox, 701 b and over, G-Jd, 7|d; cow, 33 to 391bs, 3d, sgd; cow, 4G to 481bs, s£d, s&d; cow, and over, s|d, sgd; kip, 25 to 321bs, 4|d, 6id; kip, 17 to 241bs, 4Jd, 9d; yearling,- 11 to 161bs, 9gd; calf, 9 to lOlbs, 7d; calf, G to Blbs, Bd, Hi; calf, 1 to 51bs, 10i, lid. Tallow. —In casks, 24s 6d, 275; in tine, etc., 13s 6d, 255.

Sundries. —Cow tails, not quoted; horse-hair, 17id. Murray, Roberts, and Co. Ltd, report that they submitted a small catalogue of sheepskins and an. attractive offering of hides and kip, competition being active at prices just round about last sale’s level. The only change was in cow hides, which met with a more spirited demand than of late, and values for these showed ir improvement on last sale’s figures in light and medium weights. Heavyweight cows sold at par. Ox, excepting for lightweights, which were Jd better, sold at par with last sale’s prices. Tallow was in rather better request, but prices showed little or no advance.

Wright, Stephenson, and Co. Ltd., in conjunction with Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report having held their fortnightly sale of tallow, skins, and hides on Thursday, when they offered a smaller catalogue to the usual attendance of buyers. Competition for sheepskins was keen and prices for dry skins were very firm in the sellers’ favour. Salted skins showed an advance of 3d to 6d per skin. Hides were in greater demand than usual, cow hides being |d to- 4d per pound lighter, and extra heavy ox about id better. The demand for calfskins did not improve, and they are inclined to be slow of stle. Tallow met with good competition, prices being very firm. The report of Levin and Company, Ltd. states that as compared with last sale rates, heavies were par to id higher. Mediums were on a par and lights a id higher. Kip and yearling were on a par, and calf a 4d lower.
