TECHNICAL COLLEGE
MONTHLY MEETING HELD. The monthly meeting of the Wanganui Technical College Board of Governors was held on Wednesday evening. There were present: Messrs W. M. Luxford (chairman), C. J. Sharpe, B. Edwards, W. Mowat, E. Smith, J. Patterson, W. Bruce, F. H. Allen and J. Palmer. A letter was received from the Wanganui City Council asking the Board to refer the question of payment of three months’ rent for the use of the gas offices last year to the Education Department. It was explained that three months’notice was required, which was not given when the College ceased to use the rooms. The chairman said that the Department’s architect had arranged for the use of the offices. The department was to pay for the use of them. He thought the matter should be submitted to the Department. Mr J. Patterson said the Board had received a square deal from the Council. Mr I. E. Newton, headmaster, said they did not know when they would be able to get out of the rooms when thev went into them.
Mr W. Bruce considered that the three months’ rent should be paid. The chairman said that the council had been very good to the Technical College. Every year the Council had helped with finance. It seemed on the face of the letter that there must be some misunderstanding. The letter is to be rererea to the Education Department. The principal, Mr I. E. Newton, reported:—Gas cookers. —The Wanganui Gas Office has given two up-to-date cookers for use in the two kitchens, valued at £39. Application has been made to the Department for a subsidy of £l9 10s. The Gas Company has also placed on indefinite loan a large gas range.
Art Department. Authority has been given for the construction of a further temporary building for the use of the art classes. The building should be ready for the opening of the second term. We shall then have adequate accommodation. Paths.—Proper paths, well shingled, should be made to the temporary classroom across St. Hill Steet. Owing to the continued fine weather there has been no inconvenience, but a few days of wintry- weather will cause much trouble to staff and pupils.
Boys’ Hostel.—-It will have been noticed that tenders have been called for the erection of the Boys’ Hostel. A request has been made to the Department for a copy of the plans and specifications.
The matter of the provision of shingled paths to temporary class rooms across St. Hill Street was left to a committee with power to act. The chairman remarked that the copy of the plans for the Boys’ Hostel from the Department had not yet come to hand.
