TOTALISATOR AS BAROMETER
INCREASE IN TURNOVER AUCKLAND PROVINCE FIGURES (Spe.'lal to “Chronicle”) AUCKLAND, April 21. Although the amount or money spent on betting on horse racing may not be accepted as a sound guide to the stare of the people’s purse, it is generally found that the totalisator returns fall when times are bad and increase when times are good. If the increased returns do indicate prosperity Auckland is on the road to better times. A considerable increase in the totalisator investments is shown for the first three meetings held by the Auckland Racing Club this racing season. The total amount of betting at Ellerslie for the spring, summer, and autumn meetings is £6.16,361 10s compared with £561,892 for the three corresponding meetings during 1928-29, an increase of £a4,469 10s. Investments for the first three meetings at Ellerslie in 1927- 9 8 were £680,167 10s.
The autumn meeting for the current racing season, which concluded to-day shows a total increase of £1985 10s over Jo® co 7 esp ( ) ! I(iin £ two days’ racing of Zk .A* this season’s spring meeting mn^a 1 . TeCeipts Ellerslie was XIJU.IJB, an increase over the corresponding meeting of the previous year.
