COUNCIL OF WOMEN

CONFERENCE AT VIENNA. .The quinquennial meeting of the I.C.W. will be held at Vienna 'from May 26 to June 9, 1930, and will include the second conference of representatives from rural women’s organisations from all over the world—about 37 countries being represented. The programme of the rural women’s organisations will include the enrolment of delegates and visitors; appointment of secretaries and interpreters; round table conference on reports; “how women’s organisations can held forward the movement for preserving and developing popular arts, such as folk songs, folk dances, traditional costumes and traditional handicaps”; “the position of the country woman and child in respect of the laws made for the whole community”; “wha* country women can do in all countros to preserve the beauties of the countryside and protect them from destruction by tourists and others”! “existing activities of international organisations affecting country women”; “can town and country women work together?” “consideration of ways and means of bettering conditions of rural women by international action.” Three public evening meetings will be held during the time of the quinquennial sessions. The first will be a ceremonial welcome meeting at Hoffburg, when Frau von Sprung, president of N.C.U. of Austria, and members of the Government and the town council of women of Vienna, will welcome the I.C.W. The Marchioness of Aberdeen and Lernair, president of I.C.W will offer thanks and give a short presidential address.

The second will be a public meeting for young people, when Dr. Alice Saloman will speak on the youth and aims of the women’s movement, (a) How can the younger women play a successful part in business and professional life, (b) What public duties should the younger women undertake, (c) How can the younger women make their influence felt in political life, (d) What we young people expect from the women’s movement. Thirdly, ”’e Marchioness of Aberdeen and Temair will speak on “Women as promoters of international understanding. ’ ’ A wonderful programme of excursions and sight-seeing has been arranged for the visitors. An Austrian folksong and folk dance evening, and a performance in the “Spanische Deitschule” of the Hoffbnrg, when distinguished horsemen and horsewomen, members of the best society in Vienna, all in costumes, will give the delegates an idea of the highly-developed equestrian art for which the “Deitschule” is famous. Princess Cantacuzena and the N.C. women of Rumania have invited delegates to visit Bucharest on their way to Budapest and Vienna, w’hen they will be assured of a most interesting time.
