APPLES FROM NELSON

RECORD EXPORT FIGURES LARGE INCREASE EXPECTED NELSON. April 16. From, the beginning of the fruit export season it was estimated that this would be a record export ppple season for Nelson, and it is now certain that not only will the 1928 record be broken but the increase will amount to over 15Q.000 cases. On earlier eßdm<ites of the apple crop growers in Nelson booked shipping space for 760,000 cases of apples, but now that the crop is being handled many growers are finding it necc ary to apply for more space, and it is estimated that an ext. a 40,000 cases will have to be provided for. If that number comes to hand, and there is every prospect of that total being reached, the total export of apples for th'' season will be 800,000 sases. The previous largest export season was 1928, when the Nelson total reached 604,583 cases. The following table shows the growth of the export from the province since 1927: Year. Cases1927 389,000 1928 604,583 1929 580,000 1930 (probably) 800,000 This season 21,000 cn tes of pears have been exported, making a total probable fruit export for the province of 827,000 cases. To-dav there is very heavy shipping of apples to Wellington, no less than 27,500 cases being taken from the three assembling points, Mapua, Motueka, and Nelson. The total is made up of 12,000 cases from Mapua, 8500 from Motueka, and 7000 from Nelson. The steamer Tasmania is due to arrive on April 26 to load 43,000 cases of apples for direct shipment to Southampton. Pre-cooling for this shipment commenced at Stoke and Motueka to-day. The varieties to be taken by the Tasmania are mostly Sturmers and Statesman. On April 30 the Port Auckland is due to load 38,000 cases, and on her sailing date. May 5, the Tairoa is due to arrive. The Tairoa is booked to take 19,000 cases. Thus 100.000 cases will be taken direct from Nelson in the space of three weeks.
