KEITH STREET SCHOOL
BETTER BUILDING WANTED HOUSEHOLDERS’ SUPPORT The concensus of opinion in education circles seems to be that the Keith Street Infants’ School needs rebuilding, or, at least, remodelling. The matter was discussed at a meeting of householders in the northern schools district on Monday. Miss Sampson, headmistress at Keith Street, drew a diagram of the present building and stressed the inconvenience and uncongenial aspects of it. There was a paucity of light on the one side, and the floor space was not laid out to the best advantage. The intention was to erect a new wing obliquely to the present building. This would afford more floor space, cross ventilation and sunshine. “It is quite right that the Technical College and the Girls’ College pupils should be well housed,’’ said Miss Sampson, 4 4 but if they are spending j one hundred thousand on those schools, i surely they can afford to spend a ‘ thousand or two on Keith Street.” ; She paid a tribute to the interest the i parents took in the school, and said ■ the grounds were a credit to them. , “You parents have done wonders,” she said. “You are the people who ' will move the Department. I am a voice crying in the wilderness. Everything done at the school so far has been at the Voice of the parents.’’ Mr W. Bruce, in moving that the Minister of Education be advised that the work was one of urgency, said that the Hon. W. A. Veitch knew of its importance. “We must recognise that Wanganui is being well treated so far as education grants are concerned,” Mr Bruce proceeded. He mentioned the new Girls’ College, plans for which were drawn, which was to cost in the neighbourhood of £50,000, the new Technical College Hostel and the probability of a new Technical College and a new hostel for the coming Girls’ College. 44 While we, as loyal citizens, must recognise that the Government Is treating us very well and at a time when stringent conditions exist, we must remind them that provision for educating the young life of the community is essential,’’ Mr Bruce proceeded. 4 'We arc very fori unate in the 4000 teachers in this Dominion. They arc very efficient ano though they are getting more pay now, they were underpaid in the early stages. A teacher’s work is very trying and I don’t think parents realise what they owe to them. They teach not only in the standards, but have an influence for good in life outside the school” (applause). The speaker added that while Wanganui was getting its fair share of money for secondary schools, rhe primary institutions should not be neglected and allowed to go back. The motion in support of renovation and remodelling work at Keith Street was carried.
