JACKO’S NARROW ESCAPE

When Jacko heard his mother calling him he tried to creep out of the house as if he hadn’t heard a word. On the stop he stumbled against the cat, which made her howl and incidentally brought mother Jacko out to see what the noise was all about. “Oh, there you are!” she cried. “Come in dear; 1 want you io run an errand for im>. ” And she then commenced to explain where he was to go. His way went past their neighbour’s garden As ho passed Jacko peeped in. Through the open window kc could see Colonel Chimp reclining on his couch, fast asleep and snoring soundly. “Fancy being asleep at this time of the day!” he exclaimed. “Lazy begHe pushed open the garden gate, ran along the path, and up to the window. After a moment or two’s contemplation he swung one leg over the win-dow-sill and hopped inside. What he intended to do next was to utter a piercing yell in the poor Colonel's mar and skip out again as fast as he had skipped in. But just then, as luex would have it, the snoring suddenly ceased, and the Colonel woke up. Jacko dodged behind the sofa ami waited. •‘He’ll go off to sleep again directly.’’ thought -:ur hero. But he didn’t. Jacko knew that, because he was watching through a long mirror at the other end of the room. While he watched his eyes fell on a big tiger skin rug. Jacko began to grin. As silently as a mouse he crept forward and wriggled under it. The next moment there was a shout from the sofa. The Colonel, yelling “tiger!” at the top of his voice, darted across the room, aand snatched up his gun. Bang! bang! bang! “You’ve killed me!'’ cried our hero in a weak voice, as he crawled out, as white as a ghost and trembling with fright. “It would have served you right if 1 It: d! ’’ was all the Colonel answered.
