THE PRINCESS' TREASURE.
There was once a princess who lived with her uncle, a giant, and she was very unhappy. They dwelt in an iron castle round which was an iron wall, and the princess would not even guess what was outside that wall, for she could not climb it and her uncle kept the key’ to the door. Beside her uncle and his gnome servants. the only creatures the princess ever saw were the birds —for the giant could not prevent them from flying over the iron walls. The. birds brought the princess some very curious things which she treasured greatly though she did not know what they were. They fell on the stones round the castle, and •he princess picked them up and put them in her pocket. Well, one day the giant left the door open when ho went hunting, and who should come softlv in but a handsome prince on horseback. He had often wondered what was beyond that iron •war. and when he beheld the princess he offered to carry her away. She sprang up behind hint on his white horse and off they raced. But alas, the giant heard the galloping hoofs an-1 nursued them. “Faster! faster!’’ cried the poor princess. But the giant gained upon them. lie was very near when, suddenly, the princess put her hand into her pocket and threw all her treasure to her pursuer. Immediately th« re sprang up behind her an immense forest of oak. hnllv. and beech, through which the g : r.nt could not pass. And so the princess was saved! You sn?. those little beech nuts, holly berries and acorns which the birds had brought her were stronger than the giant and all his iron walls!
