NUMBER PLATES ON CARS
NEW SYSTEM ADVOCATED ANNUAL CHANGE CONDEMNED The annual change of number plates on motor vehicles was condemned at a meeting of the Taranaki Automobile Association on Wednesday. An amount of unnecessary waste was caused by discarding the plates annually, pointed out Mr R. J. Pentecost. Also owing to the change of numbers he ventured to say that very few of the members knew the numbers on their cars. Just as good effect might be obtained by affixing a small tab to the back of the car, and that only need be changed annually, said Mr R. Day. That method would cost only for every car
and it would be just as efficient a check on registration a the coloured plates which were costing £20,000 a year. In addition it was “a beastly nuisance to try and remember your number.’’ The country might be divided into large registration districts, he continued, and this would, to a certain extent, obviate the nuisance of largo numbers.
A remit was framed suggesting that a system of registration should be used whereby motorists might retain their number plates from year to year, proof of registration being indicated by a meta] tab of a different shape or colour for each succeeding year. To obviate the system of high numbers it was advocated that the country be divided into provincial districts, each of which might be indicated on the number plate by a letter.
