MARTON MARTON COURT At the Police Court at Marton on Thursday morning before Messrs H. Y. Cameron and A. J. Sicely. J.P.’s., Frank Ireland was charged with driving an unlighted dray at night, with being drunk in charge of a vehicle, with using obscene language in a public place, and with using threatening language to Inspector Fowler. Evidence was given by Inspector Fowler, who stated he approached Ireland on Calico Line when he was driving home with his vehicle unlighted. He noticed Ireland was under the influence of drink, so proceeded to town and brought Constable Hercock to the scene, when the accused used the obscene and threatening language. At the Court, Ireland adimtted having had a few drinks, but was not drunk. He was fined £1 for having an unlighted vehicle, £5 for using obscene language, and convicted and discharged on the charge of being drunk. For being drunk and using insulting language, a woman who accompanied Ireland, was discharged on the first charge and lined £1 on the second. Expenses amounting to £1 10s also had to be found by the two. GOLF CLUB ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Marton Golf Club was held on Tuesday evening, Air F. J. Christensen presiding over a large and enthusiastic attendance. The annual report, read and adopted, showed that the balance sheet of the club was highly satisfactory, the balance of assets over liabilities after substantial writing down of buildings, ets., being £525 1< s 4d, an increase of £l5 over that of last year. The club had no liabilities. The membership stands at. .137 (78 ladies and 59 men). The men’s championship was won by .Mr A. Fullerton-Smith, the runner-up being Air S. A. Gover. The Tutaenui Handicap was won by Air F. J. Christensen, the runner-up being Mr R Fullerton-Smith. The ladies’ championship was won by Miss E. Gaisford, the runner-up being Miss Baldwin. During the season matches were played with Belmont, Building, Bulls, Manawatu, Castlecliff and Scaffold Clubs, all paying return matches at Marton. The Nathan Cup was won from Alanawatu and subsequently lost to Castlecliff by the smallest of margins. Election of Officers. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: President, Air F. J. Christensen; captain, Air S. A. Gover; lion, secretary and treasurer, AL Atkinson; committee, Messrs C. M. Holdaway, Stanford, G. AL Aloffitt, A Fullerton-Smith and G. Bevan; lion* auditor, N. I). Anderson; hon. groundsman, Mr G. Al. Aloffitt; handicappers, ALessrs Gover ami Stanford; match committee, Alessrs Fullerton-Smith, Holdaway and Bevan. The following new members were elected: Aliss B. Powles, Aliss E. Kebble, Aliss G. Hewitt, Aliss Kitcat, Airs Holdaway, Miss P. Gould and Air and Mrs I. H. .Miller. It was decided to officially open the season on April 5. OBSTETRICAL APPEAL A meeting of the ladies’ committee met on Thursday afternoon, when the result of the house to house canvas, not yet completed, was reported; £lB2 6s was handed in and banked, and it is felt sure that the full amount to be collected in .Marton will be forthcoming. POREWA SCHOOL Pupils of the Porewa School visited the .Marton baths last week to qualify for their swimming certiffcates. One pupil—Eileen Allen—who learnt to swim only last month, put up the remarkable record of gaining her learner’s certificate for 50 yards, then her proffciency, and ended up by swimming 900 yards, thus obtaining * the certificate of merit, the highest primary school attainment. Results:—Learners: E. Allen, S. Allen, AL Allen, B. Dornbusch, F. 'J’hompson, Joyce Thompson (200 yards). Proficiency: Cyril Dornbusch (550 yards), Leu Dornbusch (45 yards), Lindsay Thompson (300 yards), Eileen Allen (225 yards), Kiekia Hikaka (355 yards). Alerit (900 yards): Fred Kumeroa, Eileen Allen.

In “The Drag Net,’ Paramount’s sensational crook melodrama, to bo shown at the Marton Town Hall on Saturday, Bancroft plays the part of a man who walks in constant peril and mocks at danger It was such a role in “ Underworld” which transformed the dynamic Bancroft from the “smiling villian” of the screen to one of the foremost stars in motion pictures. It was another such part in << The Showdown” which again demonstrated Bancroft’s great dramatic abilities. In “Tho Net,” Bancroft was directed by Josef von Sternberg, the man who directed him in ”Underworld.” Evelyn Brent and Fred Kohler, two other outstanding members of the “Underworld” cast are playing in the now picture as is William Powell, one of filmdom’s outstanding villians. BULLS GENERAL NEWS. Mrs Billington, of Flock ITousc, Parewanui, is visiting Wellington. Mr and Mrs R. Thompson loft yesterday on holidays, and will visit Nelson and Blenheim. On Saturday the Bulls Bowling Club 'will send two rinks to Marton to piny in the annual Rangitikei v. Gonvilfe bowling match. Little interest is manifested here in Rugby matters, and it is hard to estimate the likely strength of the Bull? Club teams this season. It is about time that serious practice was considered by tho seniors. The juniors held a practice on Wednesday afternoon. Mesdames Stevens and Wilson, holders of tho Bennet Croquet Buttons, defeated Mf-dames Usmar and MaePherson. of Takaro Club, in this week’s challenge match, the scores being 26

well patronised by players of both sexes during the week, and weather conditions, though a trifle warm, have been very favourable for those desirous of getting into form before the competitions start.

SANDON SPORTS CLUB The officials of the local sports club are making every effort to provide a good days outing on Saturday next. The tracks will be in excellent order and some good racing is assured. Nominations for the running and cycling are excellent and the response from the schools for the Hornblow and Ale Kelvin Shields is very gratifying. Sixteen teams being in the former competition and nine in the latter. Air AlcKelvie lias also provided a trophy for a handicap race to be competed for by the girls who run first in their races for the shield events, both AlcKelvie and Hornblow competitions. Tho exhibition of drill given by a team from the Foxton School under the control of Miss Bindon promises to be full of interest. Messrs J. Linklater, AI.P., W. E. Collins and W. H. Swanger, chairman and secretary of the Wanganui Education Board have accepted invitations to be present. MAIN HIGHWAYS The contract for scaling the Mt. Stcwart-Awahuri Road is now finished. It is anticipated that permission to seal the hill portion will be given by the Main Highways at an early date. Advice has been received by the Alanawatu County Council authorising the sealing of the Foxton-Rangiotu road, with the hot-mix system.
