At Kharkov, the trial has commenced of 45 intellectuals, including 20 of the most prominent Ukrainian scholars and scientists, on a charge of counterrevolution. The trial, which is being conducted in the Opera House is being staged in a. blaze of publicity. Tens of thousands are being given the opportunity to see and hear the proceedings, which are being filmed ami wirelessly broadcast. It is alleged that the 45 are the ringleaders of a conspiracy to free the Ukraine from the Soviet yoke and their plans include a preparation for an armed revolt in the coming spring and discussions of plans to assassinate Stalin ami Voroshilov. It is alleged that thev have received funds for the purpose from Pole nd and Russians in Paris and Berlin. Serge Yefremov, head of the Ukraine Academy ot Science is accused of being the head of the conspirators and of using the Academy of Science as the headquarters.
