AUTUMN RACING

TARANAKI, GISBORNE, MATAMATA PREPARING FOR WANGANUI The autumn racing campaign may be said to have got into its full stride with the fixtures held last week and others set down to take place within the next few days. On Saturday the Taranaki Jockey Club’s concluding day held most interest for Wanganui followers of the sport, while further afield the Gisborne meeting and the Matamata gathering were well patronised. In addition to these accounts there are the handicaps for the Woodville meeting for racegoers to study, while prospects for the Wanganui fixture this week will also receive consideration.

AT NEW PLYMOUTH TARANAKI CONCLUDES CORINAX WINS BIG HANDICAP. STAKES TO PAGANELLI. RIDGEMOUNT’S SPRINT. (By “Kestrel’’). Favoured with perfect summer weather on Saturday, the Taranaki Jockey Ciub brought their autumn meeting to a successful conclusion, some very interesting racing being provided for the large crowd of patrons. That the attendance was larger than on the second day of the 1929 meeting was evident from the fact that the number <»f • correct” cards sold was "renter than last year’s figures, and all three stands and the lawn terrace were crowded to capacity. The meeting was conducted throughout in typical Taranaki style, the hand of hospitality being extended to visitors. who were made to feel at home at once. The secretary, Mr C. B. Webster, had everything on the clerical side of affairs running smoothly, and the programme was concluded practically up to schedule time. The president, Mr L. A. Nolan, and his hardworking committee did their share of work in connection with the day's proceedings manfully, thus adding ' in no small degree to the success of the fixture.

Considerable interest was centred on the Taranaki Stakes, for in this weight-for-age event Paganelli, last year's winner, was expected to repeat the victory and have his name entered upon the list of those who have won the event twice in succession—Gloaming. Motley, and The Hawk. Opposed to him were Cimabue, Toxeuma, Lady Quex and Eaglet, and what the public though was evidenced by the fact that Paganelli carried nearly four times as much as Cimabue, who was best backed of the others. Paganelli ran to the front after the first furlong had been covered in 13sec., showed tho way at the three-furlong post, which was reached in 34 3-saec., and then came home to win with ease from Toxeuma and Cimabue. It was a performance that must have pleased his supporters, for he lost caste after he was defeated nt Feilding and Awapuni. Tn the Paul Memorial Handicap, the principal event, Vertigern and Taneriri were the popular fancies. The pair, however, failed to pay a dividend. Corinax providing a mild surprise and Pcgaway, better suited by the pace in the early stages than in the Taranaki Cup filling the role of runner-up. Vertigern was third and Taneriri fifth. The winner returned his supporters a handy dividend while Pegaway’s price was also a decent one for such a good performer The open sprint drew but four starters the public sorting out the New Plymouth-owned and trained Ridgemount, who won this event twelve months ago. The Leighton gelding did everything asked of him and won nicely from the Te Awamutu candidate, Leitrim. Whenuanui, who had won the hurdle race on Thursday, was again successful, scoring comfortably, while another double winner at the meeting was Joy Germ, who annexed the concluding event. Grecian, who suffered a narrow defeat on the opening day, made amends by winning the Mokau Hack Handicap. Another who had filled second place on Thursday, Hard Words, improved to win the Paritutu Juvenile. The Urenui Electric Hack served to introduce as a winner the Grandeourt gelding Treasury, owned by Mr W. S. Glenn and trained by JT. Jamieson at Takanini. Favourites had their fair share of ■uccesses on the day, four of the winners being the elect of backers, while one returned a second dividend and another finished third. The day was not permitted to pass without a couple of accidents, though both of them were minor affairs. In the Okoke Hurdles Borsalene lost his rider after the initial obstacle had been negotiated, Hobson receiving a gash in a leg and a severe shaking. In the Urenui Electric Hack Crenna Town caught the tapes when the barrier went up and his rider, L. Duggan, came off after the field had gone half a furlong. He was not seriously injured.

Taking into consideration the financial situation as at present situated, and also the fact that there were two races in which the number of starters limited the dividends to the winners only, it was pleasing to see that the totalisator registered only a small decrease on the day, the amount handled being £24,511, compared with £25,830 on the concluding day last year. During the two days £45,933 10s was handled, which was" £1747 J Os less than the £47,681 put through at the autumn meeting last year. Whenuanui Wins Again. Democratic (£457), Borsalene (£387), and Whenuanui (£335) were well backed for the Okoke Hurdles, and two of the trio paid the dividends. Whisogne, Democratic and Borsalene moved first but at the initial obstacle Borsalene lost his rider and Joke Form showed the way into the straight to Whenua-

nui, Airforce. Whisogne, Democratic and Jen. Whenuanui was the pilot over the fence in front of the stands, with Joke Form. Whisogne, Airforce. Jen and Democratic following. Whisogne headed Whenuanui at the five furlongs but the first-day winner soon ran to the front again and had a good break on the field across the top, where Jen, Whisogne and Democratic (moving up) were nearest of the others. Whenuanui was several lengths ahead as they neared the last fenes, with Democratic in front of Jen, and in the run home Whenuanui held his own to win comfortably by three lengths from Democratic, who was five lengths ahead of Jen. Panorama was four lengths further back, and Joke Form, Copey and Airforce followed.

Grecian Makes Amends. For the Mokau Hack Handicap Grecian was again the elect of backers, who entrusted him with £905, whil* The Warden (£727) was strongly supported. Mount Shannon, Ramora and Grecian were in the van as they race! out of the straight, Monoie, The Warden, Singer and Latakia following, and at the six furlongs Mount Shannon and Ramora were bowling along in front of The Warden, Grecian, Singer, Monoie and Latakia, with Joy Spear miking a forward move. Joy Spear and The Warden were in front across the top, where Grecian, Calamine, Latakia and Singer were nearest of the others. Latakia, Grecian and Joy Spear were the leaders as they straightened up for the run home, but •Toy Spear carried Latakia . out and Grecian came through on the rails to win with ease by two lengths fromLatakia, who was four lengths ahead of Joy Spear. Calamine was fourth, followed by The Warden, Green Acre and Remora.

A Four-Horso Field. The defection of Melissa left four starters for the Stewards’ Him dicap, for which Ridgemount (£991) and Leitrim (£836) were the only ones considered. Ridgemount soon hit the front from a splendid start, Leitrim and Llanore following, and after they had gone two furlongs Ridgempunt was a length ahead of Leitrim, who was clear of Llanore and Bonogne. One the turn for home Ridgemount still held the lead, with Leitrim on the outer and Llanore attempting to get through on the rails, but once straightened up there was only one in it, though Leitrim flung out a challenge but failed by half a length to catch the favourite. . Llanore was four lengths back, with Bonogne another two lengths away.

Paganelli’s Second Stakes. Paganelli (£1427) carried more than half the machine in the Taranaki Stakes, Cimabue carrying less than a third of that amount. Lady Quex was the first to show out from Toxeuma, with Paganelli and Cimabue next, but after they had gone a little more than a furlong Paganelli and Lady Quex were in front of Toxeuma and Cimabue. Lady Quex again headed the favourite across the top, but Paganelli was first to turn for home, followed by Cimabue and Toxeuma. Once they straightened up Paganelli held his own to win comfortably by two lengths from Toxeuma, who was half a length in front of Cimabue. with Eaglet a similar distance back.

Corinax Comes Home. Vertigern (£975) and Tfcneriri (£688) were made the medium of solid betting in the Paul Memorial, while Pegaway (£420) was best backed of the others, Corinax, seventh in favour, carrying £294. They got away to a good start, Pcgaway, Lucy Rose, Taneriri and Corinax showing the way into the straight, but past the stands Lucy Rose was the pilot for Corinax, Vertigern, Taneriri, Pegaway, Orazone, Manly and Yoma. At the six furlongs Lucy Rose and Vertigern were ahead of Corinax, Mister Gamp, Taneriri, Orazone and Pegaway, but at the halfmile Corinax had gone into the lead, showing the way to Lucy Rose, Vertigern, Pegaway, Taneriri and Mister Gamp. Corinax was first to straighten up for the run to the judge, Vertigern, Pegaway, Taneriri and Yoma following in close order. Over the final stages Corinax held his own to win by half a length from Pegaway, who finished well to beat Vertigern by two lengths. Orazone was fourth and Taneriri. Lucy Rose. Manly, Yoma and Mister Gamp was the order of the others.

A Favourite from Takanini. A favourite for the Urenui Electric Hack was found in Treasury, from the Jamieson stable, who carried £B2B, while Royal Visitor (£532) and I’m Alone (£508) were also well backed. Animated and I'm Alone showed oiit first from a stragg’/g start and before they had gone half a furlong Crenna Town came down, Treasury, I'm Alone, Wild Country, Animated, Annoyer and Bone Eve being the order down the back. Treasury led across the top and into the straight, being followed by I’m Alone, Wild Country, Animated and Annoyer, and once fairly in line for the judge the favour-

ite came on to win nicely by two lengths from I’m Alone, who was six lengths ahead of Animated. Wild Country, Royal Visitor and Royal Finance were next to finish. Another for Hard Words. Blue Paper (£879), Hard Words (£662), and Belle Star (£656) were solidly supported for the Paritutu Juvenile, while Green Linnet (£403) also counted friends. Hard Words was soon in the lead, being followed out from the tapes by Quinola, Belle Star, Blue Paper and Green Linnet, and racing for the top Hard Words was showing the way to Blue Paper, Quinola, Belle Star, Green Linnet and Rose Lupin. This order was maintained round the turn into the straight, and from the distance Hard Words was always doing it nicely to hold off strong challenges by Green Linnet and Belle Star and win by half a length, with a neck separating Green Linnet and Belle Star. Quinola was fourth and Blue? Paper and Rose Lupin followed them home. Joy Germ Completes His Double. Eight were saddled up to contest the Omata Hack Handicap, with which event the meeting concluded, and in the heaviest bettinr race of the two days Te Hoia (£1201) and Joy Germ (£1028) both went over four figures, w'ith a big drop to Pererfnis (£591). Joy Germ and Te Hoia went to the front immediately the barrier went up, Lady Lucerne and Tentcall following, while Peg Black was a trifle slow to begin. Joy Germ was showing the way to Perennis across the top, with To Hoia, Lady Lucerne, Peg Black and Latakia in that order, while Joke Form was trailing along considerably in the rear. Joy Germ turned for home three lengths ahead of Perennis, Te Hoia and Latakia and had no difficulty in holding off the opposition and winning by four lengths, with Perennis a similar distance ahead of Latakia. Te Hoia, who stumbled and nearly lost his rider at the distance, was fourth, closely followed by Tentcall and Joke Form.

RANGITIKEI RACING CLUB NOMINATIONS DUE TO-MORROW. Liberal stakes and very fine trophies are offered by.the. Rangitikei Racing Club for the annual race meeting, which will be held at Bulls on Wednesday and Thursday, March 5 and 6. The programme has already been de? tailed, but the trophies attached to the Cup race and to the President’s Hack Handcap, run on the second day, deserve special mention. Mr T. A. Duncan’s silver cup, which goes to the Rangitikei Cup winner, stands 24 inches in height on its pedestal, and is valued at £4O. It is of handsome design, and is sure to encourage strong competition. The committee had intended to give a silver cup for the President's Hack Handicap, but a better idea was suggested, and instead of a cup value £25, an oak canteen of silver and cutlery, value £33, has been substituted, and this should find favour with possible recipients. The canteen, which will bear a silver plate suitably inscribed, contains 63 pieces, and is a very fine mejmento of a win in the champion hack class. Owners arc reminded that entries for [all events close to-morrow (Tuesday) February 11, at 9 p.m.

WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB SATISFACTORY PROSPECTS GOOD FIELDS AND KEEN RACING (By “Kestrel.”) Many of the horses engaged at the Wanganui Jockey Club's autumn meeting on Thursday and Saturday were seen in action New Plymouth last week, when the Taranaki Club’s fixture was held, and having viewed both days' racing the writer feels justified in predicting that tho local gathering will prove one of the best ever staged by the Wanganui Club. Naturally there will be the form displayed at. New Plymouth to guide intending investors, while earlier form at Trcnthani, Pahiatua and Takapuna will also need, to be taken into consideration. In addition there are several absolutely fresh horses claiming engagements, so that backers will be found studying form closely during the next couple of days in order to be fully prepared for Thursday.

So far as the track conditions are concerned, it may be said that not for many years has the track boon in such splendid order for an autumn meeting, and it would not be surprising to find fast times recorded at the fixture.

The handicaps have received the usual careful of attention of Mr H. Coyle, and the list of acceptances indicates that ners and trainers are, on the whole, thoroughly satisfied with his adjustments. With Mr W. C. Price operating* at the starting barrier and Mr W. P. Russell prepared to hoist the place-getters’ numbers above the judge’s box, racegoers may rest assured that three important positions are capably filled. On the clerical side of affairs Mr W. Hall, the secretary, has a capable staff to assure that everything works smoothly during the meeting. The Wanganui Cup, the principal event on the programme, has drawn a splendid acceptance list of thirteen, and even though a couple of those engaged may not be starters, it appears as if a fine field will line up for the contest. Bright Glow, Corinax, Seatown, Cashier, In the Shade, Piuthair, Yoma, Taneriri and Shrewd are sure to claim attention. Ten are set down to contest the Flying Handicap, and with the names of Cimabue, Silverniine, Lady Quex, Benzora, Ridgemount, Freehold and Moa Bird in the list matters look bright for a stirring finish to the sprint event. A decent field of ten in the Stewards' Handicap, and fine fields in all the remaining events, appears to ensure that the first day’s racing will be full of incident. JOTTINGS OF INTEREST

Hard Words will not be a starter in the Juvenile Handicap as he is accompanying Eaglet and Havaspot back to Auckland. The Takanini trainer J. T. Jamieson will have two candidates racing at the meeting, these being In the Shade and Treasury, Five of the probable starters on Thursday have been re-handicapped. Hoy Reed, who steered Rapine to victory in the Wanganui Cup last year, will be absent on Thursday, for he goes South to ride Count Cavour and Royal Saxon at Wingatui on Thursday, and Nightmarch in the Hazlett Memorial on Saturday. Many of the visiting horses will arrive heer to-day, but the New Plymouth and Hawera contingents will come through later on. Paganelli, winner of the Jackson Stakes twelve mouths ago will be on hand again on Saturday. H. Wiggins has been engaged to ride Tenterden in the Jackson Stakes on Saturday. Other mounts at the meeting will include Keddar, Rose Lupin, Goldlike, Perennis, Moa Bird and Valma. W. H. Jones will have a leg up on Arisus, Auctioneer and Evening Hero on Thursday. T. Webster will ride Shrewd in the Wanganui Cup and will also be on Count Palatine and Pass On. W. Taylor has been engaged to ride Paitonu and Orazone. N. Voitre, w T ho shows much promise, will be on Joy Bird, Malayan, Tree Chic and Soviet. J. Barry, who had his back injured when Golden Flower fell at New Plymouth on Thursday, was brought back to Wanganui on Friday. He is not likely to be seen in the saddle at the meeting. It is hoped that the injury is not a serious one. This will be “Snowy” Morris' first appearance in the role of trainer, so a great deal of interest will attach to the displays of members of the Foroell team. REHANDICAPS DECLARED

With the successes registered at the Taranaki meeting last week by horses en K a K e d at the Wanganui fixture on Thursday it was only to be expected that the handicapper, Mr H. Coyle, would issue rehandicaps for son«e of them. In the Wanganui Cup, Corinax has gone up 31bs. from 8.3 to 8.6, while The Hawk, originally set to carry 7.0 has been raised to 7.12, as a result of his victory in the Taranaki Cup with Hard Words, whose original impost in the Juvenile Handicap was 8.5, has had it raised to 8. 12, while Treasury has gone up from 7.4 to 7.12. Topweight in the Victory Handicap with 9,0, Dolomite has gone up to 9.6 in that event, being raised 61b.
