MARTON RANGITIKEI CRICKET ASSOCIATION The committee of the above Association met on Friday evening, Mr G. G. Oliver presiding. Arrangements in connection with the motor gymkhana to be held on the county cricket grounds at Marton on Saturday, February 22, were finalised and officials appointed as follows: Marshall, Mr A. Way; judges, Messrs J. Stanford, F. Christensen and C. Harris; timekeeper, Mr D. Thomson; clerk of course, Air H. F. Arkwright; starters, Messrs W. Farmer, F. Guest and H. McDonald; entry stewards, Messrs K. Biss, D. Barton and J. Burke; stewards, Messrs B. Openshaw, F. A. and R. Fullerton-Smith, J. Stewart, A. W. Porter, W. Hayward, D. B. Sladden, J. Hallwood, O. Williams, R. C. Ball,’-A. Barr and Franke.

Stalls for produce, jumble of covers and ice creams will be erected and afternoon tea will be available.

GREATFORD AMATEUR SPORTS The Greatford Amateur Athletic Club will hold their fourth annual sports on Mr T. R. Wills’ property near Curl’s Bridge, Greatford, on Saturday, February 15, commencing at 12 noon. The programme includes, running events, 100 yards and 880 yards (open), 440 yards (local), half mile walk (open)/ high and long jumps; 2 and 4 miles bicycle races; 12inch. and 14 inch open handicap chops; single and married ladies’ and married men’s races and a host of novelty events of all descriptions. All events are post entry. Programmes may be obtained on application to Mr R. Short, honorary secretary, Greatford. MARTON RAILWAY PICNIC The annual picnic of the Marton Railway employees will be held on Mrs Lethbridge’s grounds at Turakina on February 23. A special tram leaves Marton at 9 a.m., returning from Turakina at 6 p-m., the fares being Is 6d adults, and 6d children (return). The Marton Municipal Band will be in attendance and hot water and milk can be obtained free of charge; ice cream will also be on sale. A real good sports programme for railway employees and the general public has been arranged.

RANGITIKEI COUNTY RATES Rangitikei County ratepayers are reminded that Friday, February 14, is the last day for payment of rates to escape the ten per cent, penalty. N.Z F.U. MARTON BRANCH OF THE WOMEN’S DIVISION Mrs D. J. Willis presided over a meeting of the committee of the Women’s Division on Saturday afternoon when final arrangements were made for the sheep weight guessing competition at the Marton Ram Fair on the Marton Park on Thursday next. The funds will be devoted to the Community Chest. Mr W. H. Brown was appointed to take charge of the competition. A vote of thanks was accorded Messrs Reid and Harvey for their donation of a notice board to the Marton branch of the Women’s Division.

A preliminary meeting of Marton ladies was then held to discuss the part Marton should take in raising funds for the Obstetric Endowment Fund and two delegates Mrs F. Purnell and Mrs D. Simpson were appointed to attend the meeting at Wanganui on Wednesday next. THE PICTURES There are few people who don’t delight in western motion pictures — and it is for these that the announcement is made that the most popular of Western stars, Ken Maynard, is scheduled to open in his latest feature at Marton Town Hall to-night. “The Lawless Legion,” is reputed to be the most spectacular picture Maynard has ever made, and Charles R. Rogers, producer of this series for First National Pictures, hag spared no expense or effort in presenting this picture. The story is an original by Bennett Cohen and has as its theme the driving of a huge herd of cattle from one end of Texas to the other. The legion of the lawless cattle thieves try to intercept the cattle, but Ken and Tarzan outsmart them. Well known players support Ken. Nora Lane has the lead. Paul Hurst, J. P. McGowan, Frank Rice and Howard Truesdell are in the cast. This picture was directed by Harry J. Brown. (Don’t miss it.

RANGITIKEI LODGE The regular fortnightly meeting of Rangitikei Lodge, No. 14, 1.0.0. F., was held in Bulls on Thursday evening, N.G. Bro. Petersen presiding over a good attendance of members. Correspondence was received as follows: From Bro. A. L .Robb, reminding members that the Grand Master, Bro. D. F. Smillie, would be visiting this lodge officially on Thursday, March 6. From Palmerston North dispensary, advising that each lodge is entitled to two delegates on the Board, and that the next meeting vill be held on Wednesday, February 12. From Grand Lodge, forwarding annual returns for the necessary signatures. Bros. Forbes, P.G., and K. Dwyer were appointed delegates to attend the U.S.F. dispensary meeting on February 12. It was resolved to hold the annual picnic at the Kopane Bridge on February 16. The secretary was instructed to write to Kopane, Rangiotu, Roseneath Rebekah, and the M.U. 1.0.0. F. Lodges, asking them to join in the

picinc. Invitations .are to be sent to the various lodges in the district to be present on the evening of the Grand Master’s visit. Bro. Forbes gave a lengthy report on the working of the Manawatu U.S.F. Hospital Association. N.G. Bro. Petersen reported that a team of card players came over from Kopane Lodge and took the Mathieson Shield away with them, the scores being: Kopane 21, Rangitikei 15. BOWLING CLUB Mr J. H. Perrett presided over a meeting of the Bowling Club Committee on Friday evening, there being a

full attendance of members. The secretary reported that the Art Union had resulted in a net profit of £24. The finances of the club were in a healthy state. Players had complained that the number of “B” grade players was too small to permit of partners being chosen for pairs competitions, and it was resolved that all players hadicapped at “6” or over might (if they feel disposed to do so) play as “B.’s.” CLEARING SALE Mr John Coull advertises in another column that on Tuesday, February 11, at 1.30 p.m. he will hold a clearing sale in Bulls on behalf of Mr F. G. H. Wilson, who is leaving the district, A quarter-acre of land, workshop, and modern household furnishings will be offered. Also a motor cycle, builders’ sundries, eta.
