STONE AGE IN KENYA
LOST CITY FOUND Confirmation of the scientific value of the archaeological investigations in Kenya. South Africa, which were being conducted by Mr L. S. B Yeakey is provided by Professor Fleure, who paid a brief visit with other members of the British Association and made a comprehensive study of the sites. Professor Fleure also visited the ruins of the City of Gedi, 50 miles north of Mombasa, where the extensive remains of a large town were recently found overgrown with dense bush. He says that the town, which is at least four or five miles in circumference, shows that East Africa had many contacts with earlier phases of Islam. His impression is that it is of Persian Islamic origin. He mentions the ruins of the palace and mosque and at least one tomb as well worth special inquiry. The view is expressed by Professor Fleure that Gedi is probably seven centuries old, though he urges a special inquiry by an expert of Islamic architecture and Arabic writing. He hopes that interest in the ruins will be arous'd in England ns well as in Kenya.
