BELLS OF ST. CLEMENT’S

RECTOR AND COMPLAINTS. The Rev. W. Pennington Bickford, Rector of St. Clement Danes, in the Strand, London, replied recently to the compaints of barristers working late and residents that thc famous bells made a nuisance of themselves. “Sometimes, ” admitted thc rector, “our bells must be a nuisance, and I try to keep the ringing down to a minimum. Thc public docs not realise that bell-ringing is an art, and that a ‘peal’ takes three and a-half hours to complete. St, Clement Danes is thc headquarters of five guilds of ringers, and thc long ringings are necessary to keep the guilds going. “Evening ‘peals’ arc arranged only once a month, sometimes only once in three months. When we have a peal on Saturday afternoon I put a notice on the church door, warning local residents that the bells will be rung. They can then get out of thc way if they want to.

“I always stop the bells in cases of sickness, and even for a lecture, so I do not sec that thc Temple really has much to complain about. ’ ’
