SAVED FROM THE SOUP
HISTORY OF A TURTLE This is the true story of an old lady! She was born more than one hundred years ago in one of the beautiful Galapagos Islands in the Pacific, and was captured and transported in a tramp trawler to Santiago, where she was bought and conveyed in a tank to a dock-side restaurant. Here she was exhibited as a turtle, with a placard bearing the ominous legend, “Turtle Soup To-day.” The turtle was sold again and shipped to England, and at the London Zoological Gardens, where she now reposes she is regarded as one of the finest giant tortoises in the world. Her name is Sopa. and she is 3ft. long 3ft. broad and weighs 3ewt.
This turtle’s history has been a hectic one, and she owes her life to her rescuer from the turtle soup quandary, Mr C .Elliot, of Stevenage, and a great friend of Dr. Vevers, of the London Zoo. Her name, Sopa, was given to her by Mr Elliot. In Spanish it means WW
