KISSING THE STONE
QUAINT SCHOOL CUSTOM Lady Burghlc-y laid the foundationstone to the new chapel at Stamford Grammar School in October. The new building will be on the site of the old St. Paul’s Church, ami will cost £2500, about half of which has already been subscribed. The school is famous as having turned out many notable men. among those of the last century being Bishop Ellicot and Viscount Northcliffe The foundation-stone is in the form of an old man’s head, and was formerly the centre stone of the doorway of the school, it had been the custom for many years for every boy on the day of his admission to kiss it. At the close of the recent ceremony, at the request of the Marquess of Exeter two small boys wr • led by a prefect to the stone, and kissed it.
