HIGHWAY BOARD ACTIVITY OCTOBER REPORT The following references appear in the report of the Main Highways Board for the mouth of October:— Auckland-Wellington, via Taranaki (No. 8 • Highway district). —Batea County: The widening of the bituminous snrfacing from 8/34.00 to 9/32.00 and from 10/60.00 to 11/60.00 south of Patea, is in hand. Waitotara County: 30 chains of metalling was placed on the recently-constructed Goat ValleyKai Iwi section. Wanganui County: 80 chains of reconstruction and metalling between Marybank and Marangai was completed. Rangitikei County: Progress was made with the reconstruction between Wangaehu and Turakina, which is about 85 per cent, completed. The base course of metal is being laid. Four chains of bituminous emuision was applied at the south end of the Turakina Bridge. Te Kuiti-Bulls, via Taumarunui-(No, 8 liighway district). —Reconstruction and metalling between Karioi and Waiouru is complete with the exception of the block cutting on the deviation between 6 miles 7 chains and 6 miles 19 chains, which is in piG.yvcss. The metalling of the deviation of the road immediately north of Horopito will be completed shortly. liaetihi-Ohakune: Tenders were invited for the construction of the reinformed concrete bridge over the Makotuku stream, in the Rae*ihi Borough, and a contract let for the work. No. 9 District Hiiuatangi-Ashburton via Palmerston North.— Manawatu County: Himatangi to Rangiotu, the formation and metalling has now been completed on this section and trimming water-tables, fascining, etc., is proceedpreparatory to sealing. Sanson-Palmerston North, Manawatu County: Sa *on to Awahuri, a start has been made with the surfacing work, approximately one mile be. ing completed to date. Kairanga County: Awahuri to Palmerston North, on the paved length, the whole of the unsurfaced sections have been surfaced during the month, a total of 145 chains.
