THE HEALTH CAMP

Sir, The fact that the Childrens Health Camp has been abandoned thi.vear will cause a great deal of disappointment to those who have the welfare of children who are physically backward at heart. A number of vears ago Dr Gunn thought out and planned these camps and thanks to the interest and generosity of the late Mr B P. Lethbridge, of Turakina, a camp has been held on his property each year. Hundreds of delicate and young children have passed through the camps and they are a living testimonial to the benefits to be derived from a healthy life under canvas and Dr Gunn and her capable band of nurses, teachers and assistants have done wonderful work in the past and they have the satisfaction of knowing that their efforts have been appreciated by the children and their parents. They are anxious that the good work should not be checked in any way and the passing of Mr Lethbridge has left a great opportunity for some lady or gentleman to take his place. What is really required is a perman. ent site with the necessary buildings for the staff, and for shelters in bad weather where trees could be planted and vegetables grown. It is a wellknown fact that children must be in the best of health if they are to reap the full benefits of the education system. This being the case, it is clear that the Education Board and Health IDepartment should do something towards placing the Childrens’ Health Camp on a permanent footing. In conclusion, I would like to state that two of my children have passed through the health camp and I take this opportunity of again thanking Dr Gunn and her staff for their kindness and care and trust they will receive the necessary support to enable them to carry on their good work for others. GRATEFUL MOTHER.
