KNICKERS FOR BOYS
CLERGYMAN’S REQUEST. CHANCERY COURT OASE. LONDON, Nov. 18. The request of the lat e Rev. J. Gwyun of a sum of £9976 to provide knickers for boys of the Farnham neighbourhood i s now figuring in the Chancery Court. Th c Public Trustee, at the hearing, contended that Mr Gwyon, who was a bachelor, did not effectually dispose of his estate by thc will and codicils regarding knickers. The disposal of the estate, he claimed, therefore devolved on the Crown. Counsel argued that the idea that it was charity to give boys knicker s was insupportable because it would gu on eternally, Mr Justice Eve interjected: “Or as long as boys wear knickers.’’ Counsel: A century hence, boys may wear skirts. The Judge, pointing out what the endicil provided, in view of some Parliamentary enactments which held that the term males incl. ded females, remarked that the gift was not intended to apply to girls, and added that a trust for the suppression of boys would be likely to be more charitable. Counsel for the Attorney-General and tor the Farnham Urban Council urged that the bequest was good because it benefited the locality and clothed inhabitants of the kingdom. Mr Justice Eve reserved judgment.
