OBITUARY

SIR ARTHUR SLOGGETT [ British Official Wireless ] RUGBY, Nov. 28. Lieutenant-General Sir Arthur Sloggett, who was Director-General of Medical Services to the British Armies in the field during the greater part of the war, dropped dead yesterday, while he was talking with his son, near Regent’s Park. London. Sir Arthur had been suffering from heart trouble. Sir Arthur Sloggett.was born in 1857, and entered the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1881. He served on the Indian Frontier, 1884, in Dogola, 1896, in the Sudan, 1897-98, and in South Africa, 1900-03. He was Director of Medical Services in India, 1911-14. In the recent war he was several times mentioned in despatches. He was appointed Director-General of the Army Medical Service in 1914. He was appointed an Honorary Surgeon to King George In 1911. He was for some years Chief Commissioner of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem and of the British Red Cross Society. REV. P. W. JONES AGED METHODIST MINISTER [ Per Press Association.] FEILDING, Dec. 2. The Rev. P. W. Jones, retired Methodist minister, was found dead in a chair at his residence to-day by a visiting minister. He had been living alone since his wife died a couple of years ago. i Deceased, who was about 80 years of agj was a pioneer minister here. He took services when the original immigrants arrived in 1874 and was then stationed at Foxton. He has always been a sturdy battler for prohibition and was president of the local prohibition league for many years. MRS HELEN BAIRD AN OLD PIONEER [ Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Dec. 2. The death is reported of Mrs Helen Baird, of Otahuhu, aged 93, who has been in New Zealand for 89 years. She was a daughter of Mr William Goodfellow, one of Auckland’s earliest business men, who came out with Sir John Logan Campbell.
