A NOTED NEW ZEALANDER
DB. H. D. GILLIES COLLEGIATE SCHOOL OLD BOT There is an interesting reference in an October issue of the London Punch to Dr. H. D. Gillies, who is an old boy of the Wanganui Collegiate School, having attended there in 1897, leaving r in 1899. “.For Cambridge (ninteen four) he rowed, Appearing from an Antipode; at golf he’s plus-I-don’t-know-what, And won St. George’s Challenge Pot; When the soft turf his niblick hews, Deftly the divot he replaces; And the same plastic art renews The natural form of wounded faces.’’ This appears in Punch’s “personalities” column, beneath a pen and ink sketch of a now famous New Zealander. Dr. Gillies was born at Dunedin in June, 1882, and is the son of the late Mr Robert Gillies who, at one time was a member of Parliament, in New Zealand. He was educated at the Wanganui Collegiate School and at Cambridge (England). He played cricket well and was a member of the Wanganui school eleven in 1987—9899, captaining thc team on one occasion. He rowed for Cambridge in 1904 and played golf for Cambridge in 1903, 1904 and 1905. He played golf for England against Scotland in 1908. 1925 and 1926, and won St. George’s Challenge Cup in 1913. During the war Dr. Gillies was a major in the Royal Medical Corps, rendering great- service as a plastic surgeon tending wounds on faces. He became chief plastic surgeon at the Ministry of Pensions Hospital, Roehampton, London, where he further distinguished himself. He was also plastic surgeon at the Queen’s Hospital for Facial Injuries. Sidcup, Kent; at St. James’ Hospital, Wandsworth; at St. Andrew’s Hospital, Dollis Hill. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of ~ Surgeons (England) and a B.A.
