SWIMMING
POSITION IN SCHOOLS SATISFACTORY PROGRESS. The report on swimming in the schools of New Zealand, issued by tho New Zealand Amateur (Swimming Association, shows that during last season 15,836 certificates were issued, bringing the total number of certificates issued since the inauguration of the scheme to 90,459. Tho past year’s issue included 3437 certificates of merit, 4854 proficiency certificates, and 7545 learners’ certificates. The officer reporting upon the activities of the Wellington Centre says: “I am sorry that Wellington is still badly in need of more baths, and compares unfavourably with many smaller towns in New Zealand. I am somewhat afraid that until there is a properly organised public opinion on this question wo are going to have continued difficulty in this part of New Zealand in securing sufficient accommodation. T|ic baths at Te Aro need much extension, especially those for the women and girls. Further, there is need in a growing city such as this for suburban baths, which in certain cases could serve tho requirements of a group of suburbs. There is a growing interest in swimming on the part of principals of schools, but I am sorry for some of the suburban schools that find themselves too far removed from the city baths to make any progress. Most secondary schools (public and private) hold their annual swimming sports, and it is a pleasure to be present at these gatherings to see the keenness displayed.”
