DETECTIVES IN THE AIR
CARRIER-PIGEONS FOLLOWED, Two men accused of blackmail in the Rhineland were traced in a most ingenious manner. A box containing two carrier-pigeons and a letter demanding from Herr Pattberg, the general manager of the Haniel mines, the payment of 10,000 marks (£500) through the intermediary of the pigeons by a certain time was placed in front of Herr Pattberg’s house at Homberg, near Duisburg. Herr Pattberg communicated with the police, whereupon two air pilots were engaged to trace the place from which the pigeons came. After the pilots had made several experiments in pursuing carrier-pigeons in an aeroplane, they flew over Herr Pattberg’s private residence at Homberg at a stipulated time, whereupon one pigeon was released and made straight for a neighbouring village. The pilots were able to follow the pigeon and to photograph the place where it finally disappeared. This led to the arrest by the police of two miners, who were accused of having addressed the letter to Herr Pattberg.
