WANGANUI SALE A HEAV- ENTBY. Messrs Freeman R. Jackson and Co. report a good entry in all sections at their Wanganui sale yesterday. There was a good attendance, and the stock came forward in good condition. The sheep market wa s a hard sale, bidding being very lifeless, and a heavy proportion was passed at auction, but quite a number of lines were sold privately. The cattle section comprised mostly empty dairy cows, yearling and twoyeai Jersey heifers. Competition on this class of cattle was good. Dairy cattle and pigs sold firm at recent rates. Wq quote: — Sheep.—Extra heavy ewes, to 40s; fat ewes, 28s; forward b.f. hoggets, 21s to 21 s Id; medium wether hoggets, 22s 7d to 23s Id; m.a. wethers, 31s; small b.f. hoggets, 17s 6d to Bd. Cattle. —Light fat cows, £8 8s 6d to £10; store cows (ex dairy), £4 12s 6d to £5 11s; boner cows, £1 10s to £1 17s 6d; 2-year empty Jersey heifers, £5 15s to £7; 2-year empty Jersey-cross heifers, £5 4s to £6 2s; yearling Jersey heifers, £4 to £4 8s; dairy heifers (close up), £9 to £lO. Pigs.—Baconers to £3 ss; porkers, £2 13s to £3 Is; light porkers, 27s to 345; stores, 19s 6d to 265; wcauers, 12s 6d to 21s; vealers, £2 to £2 17s. THE ADDINGTON SALE FAT CATTLE IN DEMAND [Per Press Association.] CHiUiSTCHUBCH, Oct. 2. A feature of to-day’s Addington market was the record small entry of fat cattle. As a result values advanced by up to 35s per head ou an average. Other classes of stock more than maintained late rates. Store sheep: The smallest entry of the season. Prices were equal to last week’s. Medium 2 tooth half bred wethers to 26s 6d, good 4, 6 and 8 tooth threequarter bred wethers to 26s 9d, backward 4, 6 and 8 tooth halfbred wethers to 21s 6d, ewes and lambs (all counted) 14s 2d to 15s, good threequarter bred ewe hoggets to 21s 10d, M.S. threequarter bred hoggets to 23s lid, inferior threequarter bred hoggets to 14s lOd, ordinary half bred ew z e hoggets 20s to 225, ordinary wether hoggets to 15s 3d t Spring lambs: An entry of 150 saw prices recede down to an average price of from 27s to 325, with special lines to 37s 9d. Fat sheep: An average entry with keen competition. Prices were up on last week’s by from Is to Is 6d a head. Extra heavy prime wethers to 52s 6d, prime heavy wethers 40s to 465, medium weight prime wethers 35s to 395; ordinary wethers 31s to 345, light wethers 26s 6d to 30s, extra prime ew’es 41s to 46s 4d, prime ewes 34s to 395, medium ewes 28s to 335, light ewes 23s to 275, good hoggets 32s to 355, ordinary hoggets 26s to 31s.
Eat cattle: Only 230 head were entered, the smallest for many years. More than half the entry was from outside the province, including lines from the North Island, Chatham Islands and the West Coast. The market showed a rise of from £1 10s to £2 a head. Good prime steer beef and heifer beef mad from 54s to 58s per lOOlbs, with occasional lots at 60s. Heavy steers 50s to 54s per lOOlbs, medium quality 50s to 53s and secondary 40s to 465. Extra prime heavy steers to £26 7s 6d, prime heavy steers £22 10s to £24 10s, medium weight prime steers £l, 10s to £22, ordinary steers £l7 to £l9, light steers £l2 v> £l6, extra prime heifers to £l9 17s 6d, prime heifers £l6 10s to £lB 10s, ordinary heifers £l4 to £l6 ss, light heifers £lO 12s 6d to £l3 10s, extra prime cows to £2O 12s 6d, prime cows £l6 to £lB, ordinary cows £l3 10s to £l5 10s, light and aged cows £9 to £l3. Vealers: A small entry with nothing of size. Top price for 12 to 18 months’ calves £ll 18s 6d, medium calves 50s to 70s.
Store cattle: A good sale of a fair entry. Prices were a little firmer than last week. Good yearling steers to £6 7s 6d. good yearling heifers to £5 12s 6d, others £7 to £lO Ils, cows £4 10s to £9, ordinary steers to £B. Dairy cattle: A 'poor quality entry but a good demand. Values were very firm. Best. 2nd and 3rd calvers to £l7 ss, others £8 10s to £l5 10s, best heifers to £l3 10s, others £5 to £ll 10s. Fat pigs: Baconers were in short supply. Values showed a rise on last week’s rates Choppers £2 15s to £5 12s 6d, porkers 50s to £3 15s, average price per lb. 9d to lOd, baconers £3 16s 6d to £5 12s 6d, average price per lb. 7d to Bd, store pigs small entry, brisk sale, prices showing marked increase for both stores and weaner values were stores 80s to 345, large stores 35s to 425, slips 23s to 275, good weaners 20s to 28s, others 15s to 19s.
