EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN’S VIEW
gRITISH Empire Trade Week was initiated in Wanganui on a very modest scale three years ago by the Drapers, Clothiers, Furnishers and Boot Retailers’ Association. The idea oehind the scheme was to bring before the public, in a forcible manner, the fact that Britain still stood supreme in the production of quality merchandise. We in Wanganui are only a small section of the British Empire, but if every other portion emulated the aim as will be made in the City this week it would give a filip to British trade that would be reflected by increased prosperity in every country under the British flag. The spirit permeating the committee responsible for the promotion of Empire Trade Week is not only to foster trade within the Empire. That is the paramount aim it is true, but there is a desire also to make the City itself bright and attractive by creating friendly rivalry between shopkeepers and manufacturers by promoting a window dressing competition and an • industrial exhibition. The dream of the future is to run Empire Trade Week and a big industrial exhibition in conjunction with the Winter show. That will materialise when the Winter Show buildings are an accomplished fact. Empire Trade Week has developed slowly, but on such olid foundations that I feel sure that, in years to come, it will be an event of great magnitude for the City of Wanganui and its district. The spirit of trading within the Empire is growing surely and the effort made each year by Wanganui to further, its rise in significance will be adopted throughout the whole of the British Commonwealth. (Signed) H. C. HASSALL, Chairman Empire Trade Week Executive.
