The wanganui chronicle. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 1929. THE GOLF TOURNAMENT

r pHE New Zealarfd Championship Golf Tournament, which is now being conducted on the Belmont Links has brought to Wanganui devotees of golf from all parts of the Dominion. The weather, though not kindly to our visitors on their arrival, is unfortunately beyond local control, so doubtless visitors, mindful of the vagaries of the elements in their own home towns will not lay that to Wanganui’s charge. However, natural adversity, such as wind and rain, try out the metal of the contestants. The really good sustains his form in inclement weather. Adverse conditions are a strong test. This fact has been exemplified by the top scorers. A. J. Shaw’s consistency is remarkable. His rounds were 76, 75, 76 and 72,'total 299. Mr Horton’s 76, 79, 76, and 71, total 302, and E. J. Moss’s 77, 79, 73 and 77, total 306, were also consistent although unfavourable conditions certainly affected their aggregate scores. Saturday’s weather conditions, however, made amends for . the inconvenience suffered during the opening days. Of the matters which are in the disposition of the local authorities, the condition of the course and the competition arrangements, the visitors will have little to complain of. Indeed the grounds committee and its professional assistant, Mr Branch, are to be congratulated on the excellence of their work. The arrangements in regard to the recording of the score results are exceedingly good and the conveniences afforded to the representatives are much appreciated. This reflects great credit on the organising ability of the club secretary, Mr F. J. Hill. The Belmont links are an excellent venue for the championships, from a tournament point of view. They are varied, and extensive, in so far as play is concerned, while the lay of the country gives the “gallery’’ good opportunities for viewing the play. There is every reason to believe that the tournament will go forward to a successful conclusion, both from the viewpoint of competition, pleasure and organisation.
